...go wrong π Most of the greatest players ever started with an acoustic. Most techniques, licks and exercises work on both electric and acoustic.
The notable exception
Most acoustic and classical guitars offer less high fret reach. This means it is difficult to play high up on the neck, because the guitar body gets in the way from the 12th fret and above. However, bear in mind the difference can be huge between various models of electric guitars as well - so don't let this stop you. Most times you can get around the issue, just by playing an octave lower.
If you are mostly playing/listening to metal (which uses a highly distorted sound) - it is a good idea to invest in an electric guitar at some point. High gain / distortion tones are impossible to simulate on an acoustic - and this type of sound also requires a slightly different playing technique.
'Cash in' on your acoustic
Not only is an acoustic often cheaper than buying an electric guitar + amp (not to say free, if you already had one) but there are also learning advantages.
Typically we see that acoustic guitarists are less likely to develop a sloppy technique due to poor hand synchronization. With a distorted / hi-gain sound it is easy to get away with a poor technique, because all the notes have the same dynamics / volume.
These hi-gain guitarists face a major uphill battle as soon as they attempt to play with a different, or clean sound.
Also, we tend to see that beginners starting on an acoustic guitar can get a better sense for dynamics, meaning playing notes at different intensity / volume.
The students that learn fastest, use the REC functionality to post on the REC board. A minimum of three instructors will then grade your performance and provide you with constructive feedback. So if you are serious about learning fast, give yourself a deadline to submit your take for REC grading. I can promise you this will give you the sense of direction you need, and motivation to practice! (REC requires you to sign up for GMC)
