*I"ve started building patches without my external direct box and without my GNX3 as a pre amp. As a result, this should have pretty massive gain even with just your guitar plugged straight in to a laptop.

PART I INSIDE PICKING (BACKWARDS SHAPES)

Let's skip the warmup and dive in. We are going to work on our endurance, our picking and our speed today Just as in the original LESSON 3 way back when, we are also going to work on our alternate picking with some shapes that are reversed from normal.

These shapes/patterns may feel very awkward. Once we speed up they may feel truly odd. The point of doing work like these is to force you fingers to adapt to things they might not otherwise play. These are not "LICKS" this is a hardcore finger workout played to a metronome or a drum track. This is "EARNING IT". Doing this type of work will prepare your hands for doing licks/chops etc. in subsequent lessons. I think adding stuff like this in can really help your ability to play with consistency and precision. You should balance this type of work with more musical playing, as in our other lessons. Some folks never play this type of thing and you can sometimes hear it in "gaps" in their playing ability.

Here is our first.

*Start with a DOWNSTROKE
*Use strict ALTERNATE PICKING
*Find a comfortable Metronome speed and play this pattern all the way up the neck to the 12th fret.
*Double Pick the pattern, once you've got it, all the way up the neck.
*Try it on different strings.
*Speed up, and up, and up.

PART II ADDING THE CRAZY STRETCH!

Let's keep working on inside picking and add our PINKY work in! It wouldn't be right if we didn't add a crazy pinky stretch!

So let's try this.

Attached File  103b.gp5 ( 1.51K ) Number of downloads: 145

PART III CONFUSING YOUR FINGERS (OUTSIDE PICKING)

We are going to simply add an open string in. The impact on your fingers will be immediate. We are going to switch to outside picking a bit here. Just one note doesn't seem that crazy but playing this at speed will present a new challenge.

Being able so make your right hand pick, exactly when your left hand is fretting a note, while moving at speed, is well....hard! As you guys have been impressing me greatly as learning players, we are going to take this and make it even harder by using our STREEEEEEEETTTTCCHHHH and our various "Multi Pickstroke" techniques.

SKIPPING THE WARMUP PATTERN, DIVING IN TO THE FUN!

Here we go!

PART 1 - BACK AND FORTH AND A STRETCH

Name says it all.

Let's expand on our STREEEEETTCH and Alternate Picking work a bit.

Here we go!

PART A - DIFFERENT SHAPES DIFFERENT STRINGS

In our original LESSON 5 we added "Back and Forth" on top of our Alternate Picking. Now that we have been working on the stretch, let's take idea to the next level.

*WARNING: THIS IS HARD TO PLAY! smile.gif

Let's
*Play this up and down the neck (Don't play to pain)
*Double Pick it.
*Try it on different strings.

PART B - LEGATO STREEEEEEEETTTCCCHHHH

Let's get some practice doing a crazy legato stretch lick to build up some muscle memory for our "Boss Level" lick.

(Let's try to play this all the way down to the first fret if possible)
Attached File  105b.gp5 ( 1.7K ) Number of downloads: 143

Attached Image

Play it twice at each position. Only strike once per note group when on the open string. Also, let's try it on some other strings.

Here is a backing to play it with.

Attached File  105_Backing_PartB.mp3 ( 896.86K ) Number of downloads: 135

PART C - BIGGEST EVER

Let's really push our stretch a bit and use a hammer on etude type lick that loops. Let's try it on different strings.

WARNING: DO NOT PLAY TO THE POINT OF PAIN

Let's expand on our STREEEEETTCH and Alternate Picking work a bit.

Here we go!

PEDAL POINT

Let's work on PEDAL POINT stuff a bit today. We did some of this in the original LESSON 6, let's expand on that. Here is a review definition of 'Pedal Point"

"In tonal music, a pedal point (also pedal tone, pedal note, organ point, or pedal) is a sustained tone, typically in the bass, during which at least one foreign, i.e., dissonant harmony is sounded in the other parts. A pedal point is a "non-chord tone", which puts it in the same musical categories as suspensions, retardations, and passing tones. However, the pedal point is unique among non-chord tones "in that begins on a consonance, sustains (or repeats) through another chord as a dissonance until the harmony" not the non-chord tone, "resolves back to a consonance."

In case that doesn't make much sense, think of the PEDAL POINT as the STARTING NOTE That you are going to keep coming back every other note, or every two or every three notes.

Here is our first shape. Let's,,,

BACK TO BASICS - DIFFERENT SHAPES, DIFFERENT STRINGS

In Lesson 108 we are going to use a piece of the minor scale to work more on our alternate picking. Those familiar with the minor scale will recognize the pattern. This is something we did way back in LESSON 8 and I'm hoping we can put a bit more speed on it now and perhaps even do it with DOUBLE PICKING! (Picking twice per note) This lesson is using the "Shred Fingering" of the A Minor scale and as we've talked about the "Shred Fingering" just means finding 3 notes per string to play so that there are no 2 note strings which can throw off the flow of a scale when played at speed.

Attached File  108a.gp5 ( 1.6K ) Number of downloads: 127

Attached Image

Let's
-Crank up the speed (KEEP IT CLEAN!)
-March it up and down the neck a bit.
-Double Pick it

TURNING UP THE DIFFICULTY - FIRST FINGER SHIFTS

Here is where it gets interesting. This next shape is also part of the A Minor Scale. You will have to shift your first finger in a very uncomfy way in order to play it properly. It's WRITTEN TO BE HARD so don't beat yourself up if playing this is a struggle at first. Being able to pull this type of thing off will help you play loads of stuff as you grow as a player.

Let's
-Crank up the speed (KEEP IT CLEAN!)
-Double Pick it

TURNING IT UP YET AGAIN - ADDING THE STRETTTCCCHHHH

Now let's add our STRETCH in to the mix. Let's stay in A Minor (Shred Fingering of course) and move further down the scale to employ our PINKY WORK!

Attached File  108c.gp5 ( 1.6K ) Number of downloads: 125

Let's
-Crank up the speed (KEEP IT CLEAN!)
-March it up and down the neck a bit.
-Double Pick it

COMBING FORCES - FIRST FINGER SHIFTING & STRETCH

This is our "BOSS LEVEL" bit and it's got a finger shift and a stretch. It's the A Minor scale again when it goes a bit nuts in the shred fingering version.

Attached File  108d.gp5 ( 1.6K ) Number of downloads: 113

Let's

BONUS CRAZY

For our BONUS / CRAZY bit, let's combine all of the previous bits in to one long lick. Play each lick once, then just move on to the next one in the A Minor Scale. They all link up as they are all built in A Minor. Try this without looking at the tab if possible.

Attached File  108e.gp5 ( 2.18K ) Number of downloads: 134

I'd be thrilled if we can play this as a group so no Double Picking or Crazy speed until you really have it down.

Thanks for coming today, this was a HARD lesson and you guys RAWK!

SPEED, SPEED and MORE SPEED, But Start Slow!

As you may have heard, the BIG SECRET to playing fast is PLAYING SLOW. Teaching the brain to perform any task simply requires repetition or as we call it, "Practice!". So let's start slow and keep good form. (I sound like a broken record saying this for the billionth time, I know. But it's these simple truths that really get in the way of players becoming great. We are going to switch gears and start these shapes with an UPSTROKE as a way to help your hand and brain break through your speed barrier!

BUILDING SPEED

Try this one starting with an UPSTROKE (YES, AND UPSTROKE) and alternate pick and palm mute it. Let's move it around and double t as well. It's a very simple shape so we should be able to pick up speed. smile.gif By starting with an up, this pattern gets a bit easier to play and you may be able to break your previous speed barrier.

Attached File  109a.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 140

WORKING THE WEAKER FINGER GROUPINGS

Same idea but now let's pair two fingers that often don't work as well together. Again start with an UPSTROKE. Let's move it around and double t as well.

Attached File  109b.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 135

Attached Image

ADDING THE STREEEEETTTCCCHHH

It would not be complete without a stretch! Again start with an UPSTROKE. Let's move it around and double t as well.

Attached File  109c.gp5 ( 1.57K ) Number of downloads: 144

Attached Image

TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Combining "Economic" picking and Up Stroke Initiation

Let's try this. Here is the simplest shape I'll ever give you. It's all about the picking. Just three notes. Start with an upstroke, then two down strokes and loop it. This is the basis for playing some rythm parts that seem crazy fast.

Attached File  109d.gp5 ( 1.47K ) Number of downloads: 137

FINAL MISSION

Here is the full rythm part and copy of the backing played with drums/bass. Working up your "Up Stroke" and traverse should benefit us now as we play this.

And Quick Demo of how it sounds. (Guitars are doubled and panned left/right)

INVERSIONS AND ALTERNATE PICKING

We have done a good deal of work with inversions. Let's use a very simple inversion with the same shape on two strings ascending and descending using the same shape work on Alternate Picking while we work on finger dexterity. Two Birds with one stone!

Attached File  110a.gp5 ( 1.64K ) Number of downloads: 144

Attached Image

Let's
-Try it on Different Strings
-Run it up the neck
-Double Pick (try to keep alternate picking and not slip in to economic just for this workout)

THE WEAKEST LINK

Let's try this same idea but with the hands "weakest link" the third and fourth finger pair on the left hand. With one small change this may seem quite a bit harder.

Attached File  110b.gp5 ( 1.64K ) Number of downloads: 146

Attached Image

Let's
-Try it on Different Strings
-Run it up the neck
-Double Pick (try to keep alternate picking and not slip in to economic just for this workout)

AND OF COURSE, THE STRETCH!

Let's work our stretch in to this as well. Being able to maintain precision, speed, picking consistency is harder when the left hand is working a bit stretch.

CRAZY ENDURANCE

Don't beat yourself up if your arm wants to explode, THIS IS VERY VERY HARD. IF YOU FEEL PAIN PLEASE STOP PLAYING smile.gif

This is an endurance workout for your pinking, fingers, and stretch. By the time you can run this up to th 12th fret and back down, YOU ARE THERE! smile.gif

ALTERNATE PICKING RYHM PARTS REDUX

Last week we worked on Rythm Guitar Parts using Alternate Picking and starting with an UP STROKE. Here is a similar pattern/guitar rythm. This time, let your hand tell you which parts feel better Alternate Picked, and which if any feel better using Economic Picking (two up or down strokes back to back) and whether starting with an UP or DOWN stroke works better.

Continuing on our Alternate Picking Work from last time in LESSON 110, we are going to use

-Palm Mute
-Strict Alternate Picking
-Short Throw Pick Strikes

Here is our first shape. The pattern goes back one note, returns, then up one. This continues through the shape. Our first shape has a "Major" Sound to it.

Let's

ENDURANCE TEST - EARNING IT X10 (WARNING: DO NOT PLAY TO THE POINT OF PAIN)

Now it's time for my fav part, ENDURANCE! smile.gif Building good endurance is crucial. If your hands run out of steam in the middle of a gig/show and you still have 5 more solos to pull off, your in trouble. Overpreparation can be a good thing. Let's take our hardest shape and run it over all the strings.

*BONUS POINTS
-There is a position shift in this one.
-Double Pick If Possible

MESHUGGAH TECHNIQUE

Meshuggah have great right hand technique. They use tight palm muted triplets against odd metered rythms. Learning any of their work is a great way to work your right hand. Here is a very simplified version of a triplet rif. Let's play it with a odd rythm backing.
