Hello Gab,
I'm 38 year old Portuguese programmer that loves music. I do prefer Metal and Rock but occasionally I listen to other genders. I'm married and have 3 kids, all of them also love music. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - How many time have you been playing guitar? I picked up my first electric guitar when I turned 18, 20 years ago =) QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians. My favorite guitarists are James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Mark Tremonti, but I also really like James Root, Zakk Wylde, Dave Mustaine, Dimebag Darrell, Mike McCready, Mick Thomson and Dan Donegan. My favorite bands are Metallica, Pearl Jam and Alter Bridge, but I also listen to Stone Sour, Disturbed, Black Label Society, Pantera, Slipknot, Manditory, Walk of the Earth, Foo Fighters, Megadeth, Godsmack, Ill Nino, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Motorhead, Mudvayne, Probot, Rage Against The Machine, Manowar, Soulfly, Sepultura, Tenacious D, Steel Panther, Alice In Chains, Halestorm, Millencolin and some others. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - What are your guitar goals? To be the best I can. I don't have any professional goals but I would like to be able to play the music that I love and listen to. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)? I would love if I had the technical proficiency to play the rhythm and lead of any Metallica song for example. I would also like to understand music and be able to read it. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - How many time can you play guitar each day? I can play everyday from 30 minutes to 2 hours. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - Do you have playing live experience? Nope. QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - Which are your strong and weak points with guitar? I don't really know much music theory and technically I am very sloppy. On the strong side I do own a guitar =) QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - What do you know about music theory? I know the 12 notes and I did learn something about intervals a while back, not much =| QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - Can you record videos of you playing? Sure, I have previously recorded myself playing for the GMC: https://youtu.be/6kyk0FNjMjo https://youtu.be/FNKP_ZzHhVA https://youtu.be/N78eiEoptl4 https://youtu.be/NsFo4OILMfs QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi) - Share here audios and videos that reflect your current playing. I will have to get back to you on this one. ASAP. Pedro This post has been edited by pmmalmeida: Jun 14 2016, 12:25 PM |

Hey Gabriel,
I've been working on "Metallica For Beginners" for almost a week now... I'm actually quite frustrated by it... I didn't expect it to be so hard to learn, being a difficulty 2 lesson. I know the whole lesson up to the solo, but the end result is far from perfect: https://youtu.be/DkE0cU72Bbc I chose not to record in 140 bpm, because I can hardly keep up at 120 bpm. This week I plan to learn the solo and polish the whole song. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Pedro |

Hi mate, that's a good first take!
Don't worry about level and how much time it takes. As soon as you master this one, you will have the level to play a good percentage of metal songs! It's set as a low level because it's not fast but it combines different techniques that can be really demanding. I think that you are going on the right track with this one and that you need to continue practising, but in small blocks in order to master each sections, starting by the ones that need more attention (like the faster riff lines). Your palm muting sounds good, and you have a good sense of rhythm, you just need to train your fingers, try to minimise movement in order to make everything sound tighter. Let's work on this one for a week. Deal? -------------------- My lessons

Hi mate, your corrections are right! I'll fix it. The slide is correct, the "s" there means slide.
About your playing. You still need to polish the rhythm section to make everything sound tighter. There are also pitch issues when you play single notes on both riffing and soloing. I think that you are bending too much the string when doing vibrato. Besides this, your guitar is not perfectly in tune, so this neither helps with the pitch of your take. Please take care of those unwanted bends, check your tuning and give it a new chance. -------------------- My lessons

Hi mate! Great to see that you are starting to figure out how to create videos of you playing the lessons. The video looks and sounds very good. In order to let me analyze better your playing, it will be better to see you playing over the backing tracks so solving it should be your next step.
This video includes really helpful info about it: Regarding your playing, yes, it needs more work but you are on the right track. The rhythm section seems to be very close, while the solo part shows more issues regarding timing, cleanness and pitch. -------------------- My lessons

Nice. This is a good first step man! You've learnt the whole lesson very well, and now it's time to adjust some details. The first one is of course the pitch of your bends, which is not too far, but there are many bends that aren't reaching the right pitch. The problem becomes more important in the double string bend section. There you are below the note.
The idea is that you keep on practicing this one for some days, and combine your practice with the first exercise from this video: You can even apply the idea to the bends from the lesson. Another thing that I think that could be tweaked is your tone. I feel that it has too much drive and too much high end. Try balanced the EQ and lowering a bit the gain/drive. I'd like to hear a new take in 7 days. Is it possible? -------------------- My lessons

Hey Gab,
I would like to tell you that I really appreciate your help and you taking your time to try and help me. I can imagine you don't have much time to spare, so thank you for that. Here is the deal, I don't have much time to play. At the moment I usually play from 3h30 to 5h a week. I do like the deadlines, it helps me to play more. Weekends are very difficult so maybe keep the deadlines during the week? Can I propose that we take a step back, find me a easy lesson that I can't screw up? Maybe this one? https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Cage-T...Elephant-style/ What do you think? Too difficult for me? Can you set me a deadline for that? Thanks again, Pedro |

I'm just using my Firehawk connected by USB to my PC.
I just have a "Plexi Lead 100" and a "Phaser" on my chain. Plexi Lead 100 (Based on* Normal ‘59 Marshall® “Plexi” Super Lead 100, Normal input channel - British) Drive: 15% Base: 70% Mid: 70% Treble: 50% Presence: 30% Phaser (Based on* the phaser that changed the world—the relatively subtle MXR® Phase 90) Tempo: 110 BPM Mix: 30% Feedback: 45% I chose these settings based on your "LePoin" settings for this exercise. Edit: this is what I can use http://uk.line6.com/data/6/0a06439c36d454e...-amp-models.pdf http://uk.line6.com/data/6/0a06439c36fe54e...ects-models.pdf This post has been edited by pmmalmeida: Nov 17 2016, 04:56 PM |

Hi mate,
this new tone sounds better, however I still think that it could be better. It sounds like if you would be using a cabinet emulation or something. Are you sure you've included the cabinet? Could you share the settings for it and maybe a print screen? Regarding your playing, I think that this doesn't sound bad. There are some little timing issues to adjust, and there is also some headroom to adjust dynamics, when playing the first lead melody (check the accentuation of the notes in my version), but also in other parts like the chorus. The note intensities are really important to give this the right feel. -------------------- My lessons

Ok, so I think that you need to experiment with EQ. Here is an idea on how to start with it:
Try those settings and see if it becomes better. If not, try different configurations until you find a better tone. By the way, you could try any other amp. Fender amps usually have best clean tones. About timing, yes, metronome is a great tool. However, I think that you could use any slower backing and work first on timing, and then on dynamics. The way to work on it is putting all your focus on that element. Let's supposed that you are going to work on timing. Turn off the lights, and it possible listen to the backing track in the dark (or close your eyes). Imagine how your guitar played tight would sound over it. Repeat this until you can hear your "imaginary" guitar sounding clearly. Then, try it by yourself. This can sound crazy, but trust me, it works! Just for some more inspiration: -------------------- My lessons

Hi mate! Here I'll share our plan for this month.
Practice time: 4/5 hours per week Goals: - Technique Practice - Improvisation - Learning a song Weeks #1 & #2 Learn and practice this legato lesson. Try to memorize 1 new part on each session, not more than that. Dedicate 20 minutes per session to this lesson. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/ Blues. This lesson will take more time. Work on the firt half of the lesson during your first week. Memorize the licks, polish details, practice over the backing track and combine them with your own licks by using the scales suggested by the instructor. Share here takes showing your practice, it's not necesarry to play the whole lesson exactly, add you own stuff. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/BB-King-Blues/ Let's choose a cover song to learn. I suggest this one: -------------------- My lessons

It was a very humbling experience, but don't get me wrong, I really loved those lessons! Even though I failed miserably and progressed really slow I learned new techniques. I realized that one thing I was doing wrong was playing the same couple of songs all the time... Never tried something different nor learned something new. I'm gonna stick with those lesson, that song and record some clips when I get back Pedro Well, sometimes it can be the progress can seem slow, but if you are practicing new things, you are going forward.
