Hello Gab,

I'm 38 year old Portuguese programmer that loves music. I do prefer Metal and Rock but occasionally I listen to other genders.
I'm married and have 3 kids, all of them also love music.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- How many time have you been playing guitar?

I picked up my first electric guitar when I turned 18, 20 years ago =)

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians.

My favorite guitarists are James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Mark Tremonti, but I also really like James Root, Zakk Wylde, Dave Mustaine, Dimebag Darrell, Mike McCready, Mick Thomson and Dan Donegan. My favorite bands are Metallica, Pearl Jam and Alter Bridge, but I also listen to Stone Sour, Disturbed, Black Label Society, Pantera, Slipknot, Manditory, Walk of the Earth, Foo Fighters, Megadeth, Godsmack, Ill Nino, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Motorhead, Mudvayne, Probot, Rage Against The Machine, Manowar, Soulfly, Sepultura, Tenacious D, Steel Panther, Alice In Chains, Halestorm, Millencolin and some others.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- What are your guitar goals?

To be the best I can. I don't have any professional goals but I would like to be able to play the music that I love and listen to.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)?

I would love if I had the technical proficiency to play the rhythm and lead of any Metallica song for example. I would also like to understand music and be able to read it.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- How many time can you play guitar each day?

I can play everyday from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- Do you have playing live experience?

Nope.

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- Which are your strong and weak points with guitar?

I don't really know much music theory and technically I am very sloppy. On the strong side I do own a guitar =)

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- What do you know about music theory?

I know the 12 notes and I did learn something about intervals a while back, not much =|

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- Can you record videos of you playing?

Sure, I have previously recorded myself playing for the GMC:
https://youtu.be/6kyk0FNjMjo
https://youtu.be/FNKP_ZzHhVA
https://youtu.be/N78eiEoptl4
https://youtu.be/NsFo4OILMfs

QUOTE (Gabriel Leopardi)
- Share here audios and videos that reflect your current playing.

I will have to get back to you on this one. ASAP.

Hey Gabriel,

I've been working on "Metallica For Beginners" for almost a week now...
I'm actually quite frustrated by it... I didn't expect it to be so hard to learn, being a difficulty 2 lesson.
I know the whole lesson up to the solo, but the end result is far from perfect:
https://youtu.be/DkE0cU72Bbc
I chose not to record in 140 bpm, because I can hardly keep up at 120 bpm.

This week I plan to learn the solo and polish the whole song. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mate, that's a good first take!

Don't worry about level and how much time it takes. As soon as you master this one, you will have the level to play a good percentage of metal songs! It's set as a low level because it's not fast but it combines different techniques that can be really demanding.

I think that you are going on the right track with this one and that you need to continue practising, but in small blocks in order to master each sections, starting by the ones that need more attention (like the faster riff lines).

Your palm muting sounds good, and you have a good sense of rhythm, you just need to train your fingers, try to minimise movement in order to make everything sound tighter.

Let's work on this one for a week. Deal?

Hey Gab!

I've been working on solo, but I'm struggling a lot with it tongue.gif
I also have two questions with the solo tab, maybe I'm just misreading it but where you have

And at the end

BTW, back in part 1 where you have

Hi mate, your corrections are right! I'll fix it. The slide is correct, the "s" there means slide.

About your playing. You still need to polish the rhythm section to make everything sound tighter. There are also pitch issues when you play single notes on both riffing and soloing. I think that you are bending too much the string when doing vibrato. Besides this, your guitar is not perfectly in tune, so this neither helps with the pitch of your take.

Please take care of those unwanted bends, check your tuning and give it a new chance.

Hi Gab,

I'm really sorry but I went to my parents in law to drop off my kids over the weekend, so I could not practice nor record.
I can practice at work for like 30 to 40 minutes everyday, but it will be difficult to record over the next 2 months because I'll be going to my parents in law every night for the next weeks and then I'll be on vacation.
Anyway, if I can, I'll drop a take.

Thanks

Hello Gab,

I'm sorry for the lack of takes, but I'm having some problems recording...
I've upgraded my gear to a Line 6 Firehawk and now I can't record like I used to (USB to PC and use camera software on windows).
I've created a ticket with line 6 and posted on the user forums, hopefully some one will help me soon =(

How do you do it? Do you record audio and video together or separated?

Thanks,
Pedro

BTW, do you have some logo for the Gab's Army?
I would love to print it on a t-shirt to use on my videos wink.gif

Hi mate!

I record audio and video separated and then edit it with a video editor (adobe premiere). I record and mix audio in Cubase.

Gab's Army logo and t-shirt?? That would be awesome! I don't have a designed logo yet... we need someone who can do it...

Hi mate! Great to see that you are starting to figure out how to create videos of you playing the lessons. The video looks and sounds very good. In order to let me analyze better your playing, it will be better to see you playing over the backing tracks so solving it should be your next step.

This video includes really helpful info about it:

Regarding your playing, yes, it needs more work but you are on the right track. The rhythm section seems to be very close, while the solo part shows more issues regarding timing, cleanness and pitch.

Hey Gab,

Sorry for the lack of takes, I've not yet found a way to record with my new gear.
I'm gonna go the store where I bought for them to check it out, maybe it's a faulty device.

Hey Gab,

I finally got he damn thing working (a friend showed me how), so I will probably do a take this weekend.
Last week when practicing I felt like I was actually doing worst then before, but this week I'm feeling a lot better with the song.
For practice I'm just doing the whole song over and over again for like 30 to 40 minutes at a time at full speed. Is there a better way?
I wonder how far I am from recording a 'rec' though... Maybe you could tell me on my next take?

Hi mate, great to know it!

That's a good way for practising, and it can be combined with some practice over the tricky sections. Isolate the parts that give you more trouble and work on them.

Can't wait to see if some creative guy posts an awesome logo for "Gab's Army" =)

Anyways, here is the new take...

I'm not happy with it, but I've been recording for over an hour and this was the best I could do. It's one of the first ten I recorded and the last ones where even worst. sad.gif

Ok, this is a bit better but the solo still needs work. However, I think that we are ready to start with some other lessons that will help you to master timing, bending, vibrato, and other techniques. Are you ready for your first assignment?

The "coins" thing is just here, it's not official and it's to give you a kind of grading of your work on the assignment.

Nice. This is a good first step man! You've learnt the whole lesson very well, and now it's time to adjust some details. The first one is of course the pitch of your bends, which is not too far, but there are many bends that aren't reaching the right pitch. The problem becomes more important in the double string bend section. There you are below the note.

The idea is that you keep on practicing this one for some days, and combine your practice with the first exercise from this video:

You can even apply the idea to the bends from the lesson.

Another thing that I think that could be tweaked is your tone. I feel that it has too much drive and too much high end. Try balanced the EQ and lowering a bit the gain/drive.

I'd like to hear a new take in 7 days. Is it possible?

For sure Gab!

I like this deadline stuff because it makes me work harder.

Exam and deadline:

By October 29th I'll have to share 2 videos:

- A video playing Bending lesson (5 coins)
- A second video improvising over the lesson's backing (5 coins)

Right?

Hey Gab,

Sorry I missed the deadline yesterday =(
A couple of friends came by my house and they ended up staying for dinner and left really late.
I wanted to record today, but I've been busy all day and I'm going to get home to late to record.
Can I get an extention on the deadline please?

Hey Gab,

I would like to tell you that I really appreciate your help and you taking your time to try and help me. I can imagine you don't have much time to spare, so thank you for that.
Here is the deal, I don't have much time to play. At the moment I usually play from 3h30 to 5h a week.
I do like the deadlines, it helps me to play more. Weekends are very difficult so maybe keep the deadlines during the week?
Can I propose that we take a step back, find me a easy lesson that I can't screw up? Maybe this one? https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Cage-T...Elephant-style/

What do you think? Too difficult for me? Can you set me a deadline for that?

Thanks again,
Pedro

I'm just using my Firehawk connected by USB to my PC.
I just have a "Plexi Lead 100" and a "Phaser" on my chain.

Plexi Lead 100
(Based on* Normal ‘59 Marshall® “Plexi” Super Lead 100, Normal input channel - British)
Drive: 15%
Base: 70%
Mid: 70%
Treble: 50%
Presence: 30%

Phaser
(Based on* the phaser that changed the world—the relatively subtle MXR® Phase 90)
Tempo: 110 BPM
Mix: 30%
Feedback: 45%

I chose these settings based on your "LePoin" settings for this exercise.

Edit: this is what I can use

Hey Gab,

I changed the AMP to another that at least looks more like the one you are using...

Brit J-800
(Based on* Marshall® JCM-800 - British)
Drive: 15%
Base: 70%
Mid: 70%
Treble: 50%
Presence: 30%

Phaser
(Based on* the phaser that changed the world—the relatively subtle MXR® Phase 90)
Tempo: 110 BPM
Mix: 30%
Feedback: 50%

Check it out...

Hi mate,

this new tone sounds better, however I still think that it could be better. It sounds like if you would be using a cabinet emulation or something. Are you sure you've included the cabinet? Could you share the settings for it and maybe a print screen?

Regarding your playing, I think that this doesn't sound bad. There are some little timing issues to adjust, and there is also some headroom to adjust dynamics, when playing the first lead melody (check the accentuation of the notes in my version), but also in other parts like the chorus. The note intensities are really important to give this the right feel.

Hey Gab,

Of course, you are right! I'm using a 4x12 Brit T75, here is the configuration...

4x12 Brit T75
(Based on* 1978 Marshall® with stock 70s)
Early Reflections: 0%
Mic: 57A

To address the timing issues the best way is play with the metronome, right?
I'm also gonna give your version some plays to figure out the accentuation.

Thanks!

EDIT: Just adding a video with the patch settings..

Ok, so I think that you need to experiment with EQ. Here is an idea on how to start with it:

Attached Image

Try those settings and see if it becomes better. If not, try different configurations until you find a better tone. By the way, you could try any other amp. Fender amps usually have best clean tones.

About timing, yes, metronome is a great tool. However, I think that you could use any slower backing and work first on timing, and then on dynamics. The way to work on it is putting all your focus on that element. Let's supposed that you are going to work on timing. Turn off the lights, and it possible listen to the backing track in the dark (or close your eyes). Imagine how your guitar played tight would sound over it. Repeat this until you can hear your "imaginary" guitar sounding clearly. Then, try it by yourself.

This can sound crazy, but trust me, it works! smile.gif

Hey Gab,

I'm really sorry I was out for so long, specially without a word about it. Truth is, that first week I stopped posting because I was overwhelmed with work and I just though: "Next week, I'll just post next week". Weeks started adding up and soon it turned into a full month and we are now going like 6 or more weeks without any word. I wanted to comeback with a take at least, I can't. I've not been playing any guitar at all and I don't know when I will to be honest.
So, if it's alright with you, I'm just gonna take some time off and when things lighten up at work I will post here, ok?

Sorry again,
Pedro

Hi mate! Here I'll share our plan for this month.

Practice time: 4/5 hours per week

Goals:

- Technique Practice
- Improvisation
- Learning a song

Weeks #1 & #2

Learn and practice this legato lesson. Try to memorize 1 new part on each session, not more than that. Dedicate 20 minutes per session to this lesson. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Land-Of-Legato/

Blues. This lesson will take more time. Work on the firt half of the lesson during your first week. Memorize the licks, polish details, practice over the backing track and combine them with your own licks by using the scales suggested by the instructor. Share here takes showing your practice, it's not necesarry to play the whole lesson exactly, add you own stuff. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/BB-King-Blues/

Let's choose a cover song to learn. I suggest this one:

Hell Yeah I'm in!

Just watched the lessons and I'm very excited to try them out although they do look challenging for me.
As soon as I have some videos up I'll post them here.

Fuel is one of my favorite songs, great choice! wink.gif

Thanks!

Hey Gab,

Progress has been very slow. I'm having major issues with "Ben's Land Of Legato" and "BB King Blues".
I've been making really slow progress on the song too. mellow.gif

Anyways I'm on holidays now. I'll try and practice as much as I can... I'll write back when I come back.

Thanks

It was a very humbling experience, but don't get me wrong, I really loved those lessons!
Even though I failed miserably and progressed really slow I learned new techniques.
I realized that one thing I was doing wrong was playing the same couple of songs all the time... Never tried something different nor learned something new.

I'm gonna stick with those lesson, that song and record some clips when I get back wink.gif

Well, sometimes it can be the progress can seem slow, but if you are practicing new things, you are going forward. You'll note progress in the future, trust in yourself and in your practice!
