Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video of you playing the bit along with a METRONOME or DRUM click in the background so that I can hear if your on beat or not, and embed (upload to youtube then embed here using INSERT SPECIAL ITEM) it as a post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

After that proceed to MISSION #2. Here is a link to all of the missions. All 400+ of them. Our highest ranking Soldier is currently at LEVEL 30.

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

Hi Sarge,

reporting for mission 7, sir!
It was quite difficult to increase the speed on this one, especially when moving the pattern down the neck...

Here it is at 130 bpm:

at 140 bpm:

and at 150 bpm:

I think I have a lot of unwanted sounds, although I tried to mute lower strings with my right hand... maybe not enough?
What do you think?

Keep safe and enjoy your Easter weekend!

Well Fought Soldier! Your showing great progress here. Your picking is very good. Also, your hand synch is quite good as well which is the entire point of this drill. It's got non stop fret/string traverse and your hands are not used to that yet so they are not quite ready to shred this one. Still you are playing well and making good gains which is great to see!

I notice your mute intensity changes from the first to second/third vid. In the first vid, the mute is a little light and on the second/third is more heavy. I think somewhere in the middle is the best thing to try for. It should be hard enough to create a gap in between each note, but not so heavy that it chokes out the notes. This is a very tough balance to find but that's why we are here smile.gif We have plenty of missions to sort this out. For now though, you continue to make progress which is what I want to see.

I wanted to share a few pictures with you about muting. The first one is just the bridge.
Attached Image
The second one is my hand roughly placed in the middle of the bridge for a standard palm mute
Attached Image
the third is my hand planted with my pick about to address the string.

The important thing is to keep your palm mute as vertical as possible per picture number 2 so that you are getting a good mute on all of the strings without having to bring your fretting hand in to it to must the higher strings. Most players use the fretting hand to mute the higher strings without even realizing they are doing it. It's a natural thing but something that should be fought against. Ideally your picking hand should be able to mute all of the strings. This way you will be able to play open string licks which require that you pull the fretting hand off of the neck.

Just something to keep in mind as you move forward!!

You have this one sorted soldier. You just..

LEVELED UP!!!

Onward!
