The way it works is that you tune your guitar to a standard tuning (like the one on the site that robin pointed you to). Then you use different scales (scale - selection of notes) to get various musical effects. Pentatonic is a particular scale, so if you want to play pentatonic, you first tune your guitar to the standard tuning, then learn to play the pentatonic scale A squier strat is a great guitar to start with - maybe you should take a look at Kris' Begionner lessons here as a good place to start - there is a great lesson on scale here. Look at it this way... maybe there is another person or 10 or 100 more people on the site with the same questions who are too shy to ask. Ya have to ask to get the answer... I suggest checking out Andrew's theory lessons, they'll be a huge help in addition to the Scale and beginner lessons Andrew suggested. I find it best to have a good understanding of what is happening and WHY it happens. That makes it easier to learn HOW to make it happen.
