Hello everyone, I just bought an electric guitar about a month or so ago. I am having a hard time figuring out how to tune my guitar to a pentatonic scale, no matter what I do, I just can't get it to sound right. Are there any tuning tutorials on here? Sorry, I tried looking but couldn't find some, perhaps I am just too new. Hi Animosity - are you sure you want to tune to a pentatonic scale? That is pretty unusual ... -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Hi Animosity - are you sure you want to tune to a pentatonic scale? That is pretty unusual ... Heh . I am trying to pick up guitar because I was influenced by the music that I listen too(Led Zepplin, Metallica, Pearl Jam, U2, Van Halen, etc, etc). I looked for some free instructional videos online and came across one of Zakk Wylde playing a pentatonic lesson, tried to tune my guitar to his video, but was unsuccessful. I really don't know where to start(or how to tune), but I would love to practice some kind of music similiar to what inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place. Any suggestions would be well recieved! As far as tuners go are there different ones for different scales? I really don't understand how they work. Also, I don't know if this makes a difference, the guitar I bought is a Squier Strat(if you recomend starting with another one please let me know). If you want to tune it standard try this: http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/tuner.php Oh this is an interesting site, thank you! This post has been edited by Animosity: Apr 23 2007, 07:23 PM |

The way it works is that you tune your guitar to a standard tuning (like the one on the site that robin pointed you to). Then you use different scales (scale - selection of notes) to get various musical effects. Pentatonic is a particular scale, so if you want to play pentatonic, you first tune your guitar to the standard tuning, then learn to play the pentatonic scale A squier strat is a great guitar to start with - maybe you should take a look at Kris' Begionner lessons here as a good place to start - there is a great lesson on scale here. Hope that helps, if you have any other questions or don't understand, just ask! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Thank you very much, you've been sympathetic to my seemingly idiotic questions. I appreciate the patients, and look forward to learning more from you in the future!

There is no such thing as a stupid or idiotic question..... except the question you do not ask. Look at it this way... maybe there is another person or 10 or 100 more people on the site with the same questions who are too shy to ask. Ya have to ask to get the answer... I suggest checking out Andrew's theory lessons, they'll be a huge help in addition to the Scale and beginner lessons Andrew suggested. I find it best to have a good understanding of what is happening and WHY it happens. That makes it easier to learn HOW to make it happen.
