I've got a USB 3 to SATA adapter and it allows me to move data between my primary and backup drive at about 125 MegaBYTES (not megabits, 8 bits per byte) per second! So huge file transfers that used to take all day are done spiffy quick
If you have USB 3 ports, or on a mac with thunderbolt, you can get an adapter for about $25 and get really fast drive performance. My exnternal drives are not SSD. They are just regular big cheap drives. Making huge backups used to take forever. now it's really fast. My internal drive/boot drive is SSD in all three of my production laptops and it's the best upgrade I've ever made. If you don't have an SSD boot drive GET ONE!! No other upgrade will make your machine feel faster IMHO. Not a cpu upgrade, not ram, nothing.
