I don't understand exactly what you want to know. There isn't a riff technique.. it's just inspiration and maybe hours and hours listening and learning songs with great links of bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Gun's and Roses, Aerosmith, Metallica, Slayer, etc...

gabriel.-

I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to post in here but I always find with riff writing that I either just sit down with a guitar and play around for a bit until I come up with something I like, or I get a melody in my head and tab it out on guitar or sometimes I dream of riffs biggrin.gif It is weird.

Do you ever come up with riffs like that?

Hi OrganisedConfusion,
of course you can post on an 'Ask an Instructor' board - the two main things we ask is for people to follow the guidelines that Andrew's posted and that members let the particular Instructor reply first to the question asked as it was meant particularly for them smile.gif. - Which of course is exactly what you've done mate smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

Thanks for letting me know as I'm new to the forums. I love Gabriel's Muse and Alice in Chains lessons also. Matt Bellamy is one of the greatest current guitarists but he is even better on organ. biggrin.gif

Yeah going with what gabriel said, I find that when I write music I try to just screw around with chord progressions and melodies until I hear something that sounds right and i just to build on that. Also if you come up with something you really like but dont really know how to continue it you can try just taking a break or working on something else for a while and you'll find when you come back to it you might have an idea of how to continue
hope that helps

learn your intervals and train your ear, then you'll be able to tab out what's in your head easily. LEARN MUSIC BY EAR, it's been a huge help to me smile.gif
Go for walks and listen to what's in your head...you'll come up with stuff that will be a collection of all the music you listen to...you get out what you put in (what you listen to will show up in your playing).
Intervals and such will help you get your ideas out...ear train now and it will save you so much time of frustration and guesswork.
Cheers!
