Call me insensitive but how about the other 155,520 people that died yesterday?

I don't understand people rallying around celebrities.

Americans in particular has a real problem with fixating on things like this and not real issues.
I'm a politcial science buff so things like this bother me... Sorry to offend anyone.

Every single news channel is covering this, is this REALLY newsworthy? Front page New York Times.
Why aren't things like media manipulation, the Real ID Act, and the appalling economy on the front page? Well they don't sell papers, the real issues don't matter. Lets live in celebrity fantasy land!

Sure, it's an easy story and it had an emotional affect on the people, but in reality it doesn't matter.

On the flip side, I do remember being extremely disturbed to find out Dime Bag was killed...I still think my original thoughts have validity.
I honestly couldn't agree more with what you said here. I don't think I'll ever understand peoples obsession with celebrities. I mean, there are about a gajillion more important things people should be worrying/caring about besides nonsense like this. Don't get me wrong, it sucks that the guy died, but like you said, what about the other millions of people that died? I don't see any news reports about Joe Schmo, the regular, every day guy that kicked the bucket yesterday. The people in this country have their priorities ass backwards.

100% agree with you, man. I can understand mourning them, but it is ridiculous that you can't turn on the news without hearing about it.

Sad that someone so young died, he was a good actor.

I agree though that this is like a one day on the news thing, we need to move on to more important issues.

I dont think its "America in particular" thank you very much.
its "media in particular" Its sad when anyone dies, however neither my friends, family or friends are really paying any attention to this much let alone making a fuss or fixating about it. Media makes a big deal about media matters. Just cuz its on American TV doesn't make any reflection in Americans in particular.
Peace.

Well said man. It is not a coincidence everybody is quoting you.

I know a very nice brazilian song about this media matter, it is called "O Papa é pop" (The pope is pop). No it is not criticizing the pope or catholicism. It is actually criticizing the way that media overlook celebrities and there is actually two sides of this: the media and the consumers (us).....

Just think about why Dimebag Darrel, John Paul II or John Lennon get shotted? Would they be still alive if they were not famous?

Well you're obviously entitled to your opinion and as you've said - no one you know is entralled in this kind of 'news'. However, I know many many people who are captivated by this sort of news bit but will not engage in any sort of discussion regarding forgein policy, local and national politics, or really any high level abstract concept. Some of these people are college educated graduates, scary really.

The media wouldn't feed us this garbage if us Americans didn't eat it =)

Since this is an international website, do people in other countries experience this sort of phenomenon? A sort of celebrity fantasy land over reality? Or is it an American cultural thing?

I do agree that it is sad that we focus on one person mostly celeb when they die, its kinda like when the news goes crazy over a child gone missing or kid napping yet im sure that shit happens everyday and they pick and choose which to exploit. With the Heath Ledger thing i was just sad cuz i did really like him as a actor one of my fav's i agree the week news cast over it is a little much, but for me i was truly sad and not just wondering if he had some kind of scandel going on in his life before he died.

RIP Heath, won't be the same seeing you in Batman this summer.

I can't believe his funeral is being protested for starring in a movie. Shows you how ignorant religion can be sometimes (not an attack on religion, just throwing that out there, ignore it if you're a spiritual person).

I live in Honduras, Central America. And some of the trash ends up landing here. Its not like the people here are obssessed about it, at least not the ones wich i intereact with. But it appears in the newspapers, news (since they are american channels ) but also on the local "COOL TEENAGE MAGAZINES" its obvious that a full article is going to be written about it.

But thats just the way it is.

Well you're obviously entitled to your opinion = Yes I Am.
The media wouldn't feed us this garbage if us Americans didn't eat it =)= Yes They Would and Do.
Some of these people are college educated graduates, scary really.= I guess the word "educated" is rather suspect here. I suppose one could learn something from Jerry Springer if they watched long enough.....Then again....Maybe not.
