Just saw them last night in Cleveland. To be perfectly honest i wasn't too impressed. I LOVE Metalocalypse and I think they have some cool riffs and all, enough that i've learned to play a couple songs... it just wasn't that great of an experience in comparison to concert I've been to w/ real bands.
As some of you may have already heard, the band members look nothing like their animated counterparts (and the number of them doesn't even match) so if you're obsessed with accuracy that will annoy you. Wasn't a big deal to me. Yes, Gene Hogan was on the drums and he did a killer job of it. Performance-wise, they were great. I didn't hear any mess-ups or anything. They weren't anywhere near loud enough though in my opinion. They use Line 6 amps of some sort, and the tone was pretty much what you'd expect... just amplified PODxt type of a sound, which isnt awful, but since the Deth album was like the #1 selling death metal album ever, I figured they'd have the budget to invest in some better-sounding, tube-driven gear. As you may also know, there aren't any lights on the actual band during the show. Rather, attention is focused on the large over-head projection screen that plays animated music videos and stuff to go with the songs they play. The animation was pretty awesome, lots of brutal violent and sexual stuff they couldn't get away with on Cartoon Network. The problem I had was that the screen was up so high that the balcony and other overhead objects blocked my view of the upper half of it. I found myself watching the animation on overhead TVs near the bar towards the end. At this point, when I stood there watching it on TV and thinking that it wasn't loud enough, I realized that It would have been a better experience to just be watching a DVD of it all in the comfort of my own home, and on a totally viewable HDTV and loud stereo system. So, here's hoping they release it on DVD after the tour. I mainly went to the show to see Chimaira (this was my third time seeing them) because they're a great bunch of guys and an excellent band and I take any chance I get to come out and support them. They put on an awesome performance, although it was the shortest set of theirs i'd seen since they were headlining the other tours. I got some pictures and stuff I might upload here, and some videos I might put on myspace in the near future. I was right down front and in the mosh pit for them, but had to go to the bar and got stuck back there for Dethklok. Another plus is that I actually managed to NOT be escorted out of the pit or stripped of my alcohol wrist-band by security this time, which is a first for me with Chimaira shows cause I always load up on JD before hand. Oh, and the other band, Soilent Green I think they were called, was pretty decent also. Overall, not a bad show, but I've seen about dozen better death metal shows. A lot of people were there for Dethklok, and there was a good number of younger people and women that seemed to be there for just them. Maybe this was the first metal show experience for these people, so kudos to Dethklok and everyone involved with Metalocalypse for providing an approachable gateway into the metal scene for them. [edit: uploaded Chimaira pics to photobucket here. Sorry, no Dethklok, but I'm people have taken better ones of them than I was able to anyway] This post has been edited by steiner666: Jun 20 2008, 08:00 PM |
