It hasn't happened yet so I can't do a review but July 2nd I'm going to see Brendon Small tear it up! Definitely gonna be a cool show and I'll try and post a review and maybe some pictures when I come back.

Just saw them last night in Cleveland. To be perfectly honest i wasn't too impressed. I LOVE Metalocalypse and I think they have some cool riffs and all, enough that i've learned to play a couple songs... it just wasn't that great of an experience in comparison to concert I've been to w/ real bands.

As some of you may have already heard, the band members look nothing like their animated counterparts (and the number of them doesn't even match) so if you're obsessed with accuracy that will annoy you. Wasn't a big deal to me. Yes, Gene Hogan was on the drums and he did a killer job of it. Performance-wise, they were great. I didn't hear any mess-ups or anything. They weren't anywhere near loud enough though in my opinion. They use Line 6 amps of some sort, and the tone was pretty much what you'd expect... just amplified PODxt type of a sound, which isnt awful, but since the Deth album was like the #1 selling death metal album ever, I figured they'd have the budget to invest in some better-sounding, tube-driven gear.

As you may also know, there aren't any lights on the actual band during the show. Rather, attention is focused on the large over-head projection screen that plays animated music videos and stuff to go with the songs they play. The animation was pretty awesome, lots of brutal violent and sexual stuff they couldn't get away with on Cartoon Network. The problem I had was that the screen was up so high that the balcony and other overhead objects blocked my view of the upper half of it. I found myself watching the animation on overhead TVs near the bar towards the end. At this point, when I stood there watching it on TV and thinking that it wasn't loud enough, I realized that It would have been a better experience to just be watching a DVD of it all in the comfort of my own home, and on a totally viewable HDTV and loud stereo system. So, here's hoping they release it on DVD after the tour.

I mainly went to the show to see Chimaira (this was my third time seeing them) because they're a great bunch of guys and an excellent band and I take any chance I get to come out and support them. They put on an awesome performance, although it was the shortest set of theirs i'd seen since they were headlining the other tours. I got some pictures and stuff I might upload here, and some videos I might put on myspace in the near future. I was right down front and in the mosh pit for them, but had to go to the bar and got stuck back there for Dethklok. Another plus is that I actually managed to NOT be escorted out of the pit or stripped of my alcohol wrist-band by security this time, which is a first for me with Chimaira shows cause I always load up on JD before hand. smile.gif

Oh, and the other band, Soilent Green I think they were called, was pretty decent also.

Overall, not a bad show, but I've seen about dozen better death metal shows. A lot of people were there for Dethklok, and there was a good number of younger people and women that seemed to be there for just them. Maybe this was the first metal show experience for these people, so kudos to Dethklok and everyone involved with Metalocalypse for providing an approachable gateway into the metal scene for them.

[edit: uploaded Chimaira pics to photobucket here. Sorry, no Dethklok, but I'm people have taken better ones of them than I was able to anyway]

I just came back from seeing them.
I thought they played well, but let's be honest, the band members are a bunch of geeks. There is nothing wrong with that but their stage presence was close to zero.

The songs were played well and Small is a pretty good guitar player. Unfortunately it was too light out to see the screen behind them so we weren't treated to the brutal music videos.

That being said they did a good job amongst the other professional musicians there today... that is actually saying a lot considering the other acts included Overkill, Symphony X, Hatebreed, Type O Negative and IRON MAIDEN

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I just saw them and the stage presence was great, even without the big screen they were great, Brendon didn't just stay at the mic or anything he ran around stage and whatnot. They show was just incredible, the only complaint I have is the fans, probably not all fans of metal, just fans of the show. Moshing wasn't done in a respectable way. I didn't see anyone getting helped up and they just seemed rather rude, a guy next to me was determined to make me miserable (he failed) and I noticed near the end of their show two girls that when anyone touched them (which anyone at a metal show can tell you is constantly happening) would do this weird bend/push thing that would push everyone in like a 180 degree radius back like a few feet, just really rude people. Of course not all of them were rude but they were a few of them.

Regardless of annoying fans the show was incredible they didn't play Better Metal Snake (which would have been cool but oh well) Face Fisted or The Lost Vikings but all the other stuff from the album and Duncan Hills Coffee were played and played darn near perfectly. The only thing close to a mistake that I noticed was in the Hatredcopter solo (which wasn't really a mistake I think he just did it differently)

Really an amazing night.

After the show me and some friends waited outside and met the band, I asked Brendon Small if the band would continue after the show was over with and he said he hoped so since he likes playing in a band more than doing a tv show. Also meeting Gene Hoglan was incredible, he's definitely my favorite drummer and has been for a while, also I thought it kind of cool that my friend got The New Black by Strapping Young Lad signed.

I hope to see them the next time they tour, and my signed Dethalbum agrees with me laugh.gif

Well I'm glad you liked it but your experience seemed to be the opposite of mine.

Brendon just walked up to the mic, put one foot forward and didn't move at all for his entire set.
It's too bad about the crowd, when I saw them, they had a video explain moshing etiquette, it even mentioned to you HAD to help up whoever you knocked down.

What I would LOVE to see is dethklok put together with all the real people that the animated characters are based off of. That would be epic

anyway about the amps, I can't believe they played Line 6
I have a picture of when I saw them.

I think Brendon played a Mesa with a Krank Cab, and the 2nd guitarist seems to have a Randall playing through a Marshall cab
