Oct 10 2008, 05:28 PM	GMC:er Posts: 32 Joined: 9-October 08 From: Leeds, UK	Hey guys am new here this is my first post in this section of the forum, just want some advice on where to start with theory, i know the basics (caged system, few intervals, notes on Bottom E and A and technically top E too , pentatonic scale). I basically want to start gettin serious with soloing and improvising and stuff like that and i think theory will help (correct me if wrong ). Where should i start because i want to be able to look at the fretboard and know exactly what my fingers are doing and where they should be going instead of relying on scale boxes. Should i learn all the notes on the fretboard (if so how, i really struggle to concentrate when it comes to theory too ) Any advice would be great - ooo also if someone could help ive been practicing my sweep picking for a while and want to know if im doing the technique right. Say you are starting on bottom E string and there is 2 notes on the same string would you alternate pick those too notes, pick both down or hammer on to the second note? i currently use alternate pickin just for that and then carry on the sweep. And went up and down the string saying the notes out loud, First saying the Whole tones E, F, G ,A.. etc. Then the Semi-Tones F#/Gb,G#/Ab,etc.. then say both the semitones and the whole tones. At the end of the day go for the challenge were you pick a random fret and try to name the note.(While saying them out loud try to sing them to pitch to train your ear.). It is vital to know the frets marked by your fret markers as they serve for great reference. I dont know all the notes, but i can name them in under 15 seconds about given anyplace, so i guess this works for some. You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. Oct 11 2008, 10:53 AM	GMC:er Posts: 32 Joined: 9-October 08 From: Leeds, UK	Thanks for your replies guys i like ur idea sami i will try to use ur way to learnt the fretboard (what i was thinking is sticking really small bits of paper under the strings on each fret but that would limit any string bending - i thowt this way because i would be able to see each note while playing and eentually when taking them off i would still see those note) obviously i would use my cheap guitar to do this lol. Just a tiny correction Sami,from E to F there's a semi tone distance,not whole tone. Perhaps you were thinking of white and black keys on the keyboard, white keys as the main notes,without sharps or flats? ALso it would be wise to learn the notes on the rest 3 strings. If you already know "technically" 3 of them, then you only need to learn just 3 more. Yes thats what i most definitely meant! sorry for the confusion, a silly mistake indeed haha When learning the notes of the fret board my intention was to learn the whole C major scale across the neck(which i know now) so i thought of it as learning all the "white keys" (or all the notes that are in C major on each string), and then all the out of key notes.
