iv been working on my alternate picking for a bit now...but im not sure whether your meant to angle your pick down towards the ground whilst picking upwards, and angling your pick up towards you when picking downwards ..or keep your pick straight and just go up and down.....if any one understands wat im on about, cud they giv me som advice please??? Not that I'm an expert but ... the way you initially describe angling the pick sounds like sweep picking. For alternate picking you keep the pick kind of flat and move up and down against the strings with a wrist movement. In fact you need to twist the pick a little (as opposed to angling it) so it cuts the string at an angle - its hard to explain in words, but Kris goes through this part a lot of detail in his speed picking basics video here - I suggest you have a look at that. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Not that I'm an expert but ... the way you initially describe angling the pick sounds like sweep picking. For alternate picking you keep the pick kind of flat and move up and down against the strings with a wrist movement.
