Don't quite ... you are right !!!

Major - 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Natural Minor - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

Concerning spelling the major scale correctly. You wanted to say major 3rd, major 6th and major 7th i suppose.

I may be putting my head above the parapet here as my theory knowledge is basic but here goes!
Certainly the minor scale has a flattened 3rd in relation to the major scale, the third sets the major and minor sounding scales apart, hence the discussion around power chords which have no 3rd and are ambiguous.
In my mind everything is built from the major scale, so if you have a minor scale the 3rd is flattened from the major scale, which makes it minor. If you take the major scale and flatten the 7th then you get the mixolydian, always think of the major scale first and how the inetrvals differ to make other scales.

Hope that helps, its how i think. I will now get shot down no doubt!!

EDIT:In the time it took me to write this its been answred laugh.gif

I think that's a really good idea. Major scale will always be THE (basic) scale in western music so thinking about all other scales in relation to the major scale will be a help.

Compared to the major scale: minor (aeolian) scale has a lowerd 3rd, 6th, 7th. Dorian only has the 3rd and 7th lowered. BUT the Phrygian scale has the 3rd, 6th, 7th AND the 2nd lowered. These are the minor scales btw. (OK, Locrian is a diminished one, and has 5 five altered notes: 2b, 3b, 6b, 7b AND even a 5b - a lowered 5th, hence diminished).

All the other scales out of seven (counting the major scale (Ionian) and the minor sclae (Aeolian)) are "major" scales (with a major 3rd in them) and they are much more simply derived from the original major scale: Lydian only has its 4th RAISED a half step (4#), and Mixolydian has only its 7th lowered a half step (7b) - this latter one sted has mentioned already.

If you only match up minor and major scales (like C major - Aminor, A major - F# minor and so on) you won't necessarily see the difference because these pairs share the same notes and you would only start the minor scale from a different note. It's much more useful (for me at least) to listen to these scales (or only the minor scale) separately. So thinking about the A minor scale without thinking of the C major scale no matter how closely they are related (and used together). smile.gif

You are right Marc, except names are not raised and lowered. 3rd, 6th and 7th can be major or minor, major having two whole steps, and minor having one whole and one half step interval.

You are there Marc smile.gif
It depends what kind of minor scales we are talking about. They have different sort of 6th and 7th scale degree. Also there is Harmonic Major and it has different type of 6th for example.
Just don't quit man smile.gif

I think you think too much smile.gif
Raised 3rd is 4th, so while it i correct what you wrote, it will mess your brain pretty bad. smile.gif
3rd and 7th can't be raised.
Major scale doesn't have anything raised or lowered, it's simply major scale. It's reference point. For minor scale you can say that has lowered 3rd and 6th. 3rd and 6th from major scale.
Remember what Bruce Lee said at "Dragon's nest":
"Don't think, feeeeel!"
