I'm curious who will be the first to recognize this player.

Hint: this is one of his side projects, so the segment is not from his own albums.

Bonus points for the GMC member who also spots the modal scale in this song! smile.gif

I'm gonna call it E lydian ... only because the drone is E and there's a bunch of Bb in there.
Don't know who the player is. It's kind of Vai esque - ?

Lydian was my first guess...

Satch came to mind... sounds like his tone and touch. I'm not aware of him having any other side projects except for Chickenfoot. I'd be surprised if this is a Chickenfoot song. biggrin.gif

Yes, E lydian is the perfect answer regarding the mode of the song. Congrats! smile.gif

Just a little correction: the note that you were referring to as a Bb is actually an A#. Of course these notes are enharmonic, so in practice they are identical, but in music theory there is a difference between them. The name A# shows that it's the fourth note of a major scale that is raised. If you take any major scale, and raise the fourth then you get the lydian scale: E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D# is E major, and E-F#-G-A#-B-C#-D# is E lydian.

Yes, the player is Joe Satriani, great answer! And yes, it's definitely not a Chickenfoot song. He rarely plays guest solos on other guitarists' albums, so this is an exception.

So the only question that is left: on which album is this song?

Regarding the Bb/A# ... oops, duh laugh.gif
Yeah, I know. Just an enharmonic mistake - my bad. I do it all the time when I talk about music.

Lydian struck my mind from the first set of notes - wasn't sure it's Satch though, but I'd be really curious to know who's album is he staring on - Dave Martone's maybe? smile.gif

Great thread! I'm impressed of how similar to Vai sounds Joe in this solo. However those faster than light and long legatos should have given me the answer quicker! also.. what a nice mode Lydian is! smile.gif

Hi Cosmin, the album is Jason Becker's "Collection" album (2008), featuring Satriani and a ton of great musicians (Michael Lee Firkins, etc.)
