It dosent matter how long you practise....
What matters is what you practise and how you practise it in the time you have..... 1 hour of serieus and concentrated practising is better then 5 hours of goofing around..... Its good if you can make a practise schedual and work on the things you want to improve on...... Take it slow and dont rush it.... You dont become a guitar god over night -------------------- My Gear

It is good to practice and play as much as you can, and I think learning theory would help a great deal in understanding what are you practicing and why. Theory can also help you to determine what are you going to practice. I think using some kind of a exercise system can help, and these systems are greatly based on your current playing level. In general my advice is to keep it slow at first and analyze what you need to work on. Don't make heavy lesson plans that will take you months to finish, just take one small step at a time to remain inspired and focused on your goals.
We all have different goals, and the important part of your guitar playing journey is to find out what is your goal. Let's presume that you want to be one of the greatest guitar players in the world. I think there is nothing wrong with that - in fact if that is your attitude, then by all means follow it, it's a great one! Along side being one of the guitar gods, you should see what kind of music do you like, what kind of tone/sound you're after, and where do you see your music relative to other people and the rest of the world. All the guitar gods being awesome players, were awesome composers as well, or been in a band with some greatest hits that lots of people know. So I think starting to compose from early years of development, and really focusing on the techniques that you know you are not so good with are the one of the main challenges. I think being one of the greats is many peoples goal, but not all make it cause the road to there is very very hard. It takes a lot of persistence, faith and hard work, and even some degree of luck to manage to become major artist. But I think anyone can do it if he puts his mind into it, and we can all become only better and better players if we practice hard and long enough. Now bare in mind that on that level, guitar and music will definitely require you to make some priorities in your life, but hey, if you love music and love to be one of the greats, I say go for it, and follow your dream. When starting to play the guitar, people often underrate the importance of music theory. Every musician should be aware of at least basic music theory in order to reach the next milestone, and become semi-pro, or pro artist. This is done over time, but I would say a really persistent musician can cover lot of territory when practicing 3-4 hours every day for 5 years. The most important thing is to never stop playing, and always find some time to play/practice the guitar. Even if you don't practice one or two days (sometimes you have to take a break) try listening to music, learning theory a bit, or just compose simple stuff so you are constantly in touch with the music. I think many players loose contact with music after a while and start chasing technique instead. This is good, but after a while it becomes a workout with no real love, and it can cause people to "overburn" and loose interest in playing. I suggest that you always keep a strong connection between you and music you like/create. This will ensure that when you take your instrument you will remain inspired and look at the technique only as a tool to produce better music for world around you - not looking at the technique as a goal by itself. The numbers that researchers have recently settled on is 10,000 hours or approximately 10 years, with 4 hours a day being about as much practice as can be good for you without injury. That won't get you to "best there ever was," but it will get you to master or virtuoso level.

You can add also those techniques that you need to practice for your style in that way  I would like to know how is possible to practice 16 hours a day (ok Petrucci can do it for 63 hours a day, but he learned time warp  )  that means you sleep like 5-6 hours, no fresh air, no girls, no body\mind training, no fun time - you become ill in no time with that regime But glad you decided very serious practice! Work hard, no matter what.
But it's also very important to really enjoy while you work, working under pressure to get some "best" results probably won't give you much. Music is an art and there must be a passion, even when you practice technique only. I've never had any practice regime in my life but many guys do have it and there is nothing wrong with that, it's just that looking at the watch all the time maybe isn't best solution, relax, take your guitar and explore it. -------------------- Youtube

2 Hours, 4 hours, 8 Hours, 16 Hours, damn don't you guys have a job / life. I'm happy if I manage 2 hours a day and may be 6 hours on a weekend (when my girlfriend isn't around). How the hell do you guys get so much time to practice?
