It was the greatest guitar I have ever played. I had to get rid of it years ago for financial reasons. To this day, I have owned several guitars but none have compared. And yes, they are fast! Just ask Al DiMeola. Great guitar, have no fear of getting one. But, don't go in search of a Paul with a wammy bar and heavy metal paintings, skulls, etc. You would get shot for asking! It's awesome. Also be careful about the neck - they come in 50's style (wide as a baseball bat to quote rokchik) and 60's style - supposedly more tapered. WARNING - OPINIONATED STATEMENT TO FOLLOW - They have the worst g-d d-mned upper fret access of any solid body guitar I have ever played, unless you have spider fingers like Jimmy Page. If you want 24 frets, I am guessing that upper fret access is important to you. Some people can pull it off, like Zakk Wylde, Slash, Hammett....I, however, feel like I'm wrapping my hand around a brick when I play 15th fret or above. Just my $.02 USD. Then your right, thats probably something thats different for everyone then. I can bend at the 21st fret on the high E and B strings no problem, but i've got some long fingers, so that might have something to do with it. I'd say get one, you won't regret it. If you want a whammy bar that bad, you could just get a whammy pedal, which I actually prefer over the whammy bar anyway, since you don't need to use your hands. The PRS looks alright, but it just feels way too... shred for me the thing with les pauls is that its kinda specialised in its playing, yes the high frets are hard to access, and there is no whammy bar (and ofcourse i want the thick 50s neck). I only need the occasional high fret bend, and i don't enjoy the whammy bar sound in particular so no loss there. If I want to do things that a LP is not capable of, i'll play my ibanez. Exactly, I have what you might describe as "sausage fingers"....I am in LOVE with the sound of a Les Paul, I just don't have the digits to make it work. Very active forum on the subject. All the advice you could want, most people that post on that forum have at least 3, or as many as 20 or 30. I would not put a whammy on the LP. Will clobber resale value for one thing. Get a different guitar for that. If you have to have a whammy all the time, well that to me means you don't play the LP much. It is not for that. They sound great and with the 60s style neck and low action, are very nice and fast to play also. I have two guitars with the Les Paul style body, my Gibson Les Paul (22 frets) and my ESP LTD EC-400 (24 frets), upper fret access (after the 19th fret) is not nearly as good as my ESP LTD Viper 400 or Dean Vendetta XM, but you can work around it in most solos. The weird thing is, my Les Paul and EC-400 neck do feel faster and play better up to and above the 19th fret than all my other double cutaway guitars, however my Ibanez prestige is on the way so I am not sure how that will compare. If you can live with the tougher string bends and playability from fret 19-22, the Les Paul is GREAT! I just wish it was a double cutaway also. (with the exception of my shark diving trip for next year...can't wait) I've always loved the LP even before I ever tried to play guitar. For me it's always been the look of it and the sound. Not to mention all my fav guitarist use one. If you are going to get one I recommend trying the different styles and necks...thx for the quote Andrew.
