Yeah...It's all about experiments cause too many factors changes - guitar, cab, speaker etc. I think cuting the high end would be the first step and then there are no further hard rules. Also remember that setting up the tone for live playing and setting up the tone for record (with drums already passed through EQ) are two different things. One of basic mistakes is trying to get the tone comparing the the mixed, mastered record, played through the hi-fi and then trying to use this set up with a live band. Everytime You play in the places smaller than the big, outdoor stage You will need some headroom for the middle frequencies. This is caused by the drums that are usually scooped in records and as an opposite - they have tons of "body" frequencies (low mid especially) and they can easily cover the guitar. So You usually need to have more middle on stage than You would probably set up for the recording
