Hi fellas,

I have an old strat I'd like to tinker with! smile.gif The problem is I don't really know where to start - do you know any good tutorials for customizing guitars?

If you can get the Swedish magazine FUZZ in Tampere they just started, present issue, a series on basic hot rodding of guitars.

What's the guitar in question, you have a photo or something? What are the weak points of the guitar?

What kind of 'tinkering' are you thinking of?
Respray? Pickup replacement? New Hardware, (Bridge, Tuners etc??)

By tinkering I mean fixing issues, but perhaps also just getting used to customizing. It's a cool skill. biggrin.gif

I'll give you a photo ASAP. smile.gif It's a Fender Stratocaster, some 4 years old, cost ~900 €.

The weaknesses are multiple, one of them resulting from my careless use (I'll be damed to Hell for this...). The tremolo bar part of my guitar is "twisted" (because I often left the tremolo bar on the guitar while putting it in a bag etc.) so that the bar doesn't fit there normally anymore. I'm not sure what caused this but things are as they are.

It also doesn't have enough volume. It sounds crazy, but when I put in my Strat I have to turn the volume knob of my amp so much higher than with my Ltd.

The guitar has a "weak" sound. It doesn't have much bass and the treble part is highly audible - changing the pickup (not sure about the term - by pickup I mean which microphone the guitar is using to produce the sound) position this can of course be slightly helped.

The guitar also kills the notes very quickly. I play a note, and very quickly the voice disappears away. This is especially audible when playing with low gain.

It also kills very much of the gain put in. I have to put in extreme amounts of gain in order to gain a cool distortion good enough for Metal music, for example.

These are the main issues of my guitar. smile.gif

Sounds like you need a new tremolo bar, a set up for your guitar and some new pickups!
You want hotter pickups with more output, they will sustain longer and give you more gain and volume.

In a good guitar, which I guess a 900€ strat has to be it should sing pretty well and not die. But I belive the solution could sit in, not neccessaryly pickups and such, but how your guitar is set up. A badly set up guitar will not sound good even if it costed 4000€.

New strings - of course!
Set the neck right! Measure and adjust the trussrod. This will do wonders to how the neck and body will sing.
Check with Fender how your bridge should be set up. Some place the rear onto the body to achine better sustain, but a proper way can be described by Fender on your model. I'm talking about the gap between the rear and the body.

If these things aren't set up right new pick ups and such won't help much. Perhaps a proper run through will be enough and make the magic you lack now. If it's badly setup today and you set it up right you can improve the sound a couple 100% !!

Thank you for all your answers - I think I'll start by buying some new strings and getting used to adjusting the bridge and trussrod of my Strat! smile.gif

I would suggest taking it to a Tech/Luthier for a proper Set-up first and see if he will let you watch whilst he does it.
I only say this as I've done more Set-ups on badly adjusted Guitars where people have tried things themselves without fully understanding what they are doing. If you still would rather do it yourself is there any way you can take some pics of your current set-up and I'll try to help you through?
New Strings is a definite first step!!!!
