Hello all,

I found myself in a bit of a dilemma. BUt before i get into that, i guess ill do a bit of a back story, just so you can kind of get to know me and my story for playing.

I started to play guitar my freshman year of Highschool. I always wanted to play, i mean my dad would listen to Van Halen, and Erik Johnson and i would just think about how i wish i could play so smooth and just plain amazing. WHen i started to play Freshman year, i sucked. Haha, no surprise, but i didnt want to fail the class so i practiced and practed eventually getting my grade up to a B. I started to really enjoy it, so i took it again next year, and i eventually took it all 4 of my years in HS. Now what happened was i started to only play because it was an easy class i could pass. I had gotten quite good. BUt i felt like i didnt wanna play, and it was only for school, so i didnt play over the summer, i played a few minutes like every month, but it was like just playing a few chords then i was done.

Now i want to actually play, not for school classes, but as a hobby and to get where i want to be able to play.
I realized i wanted to play again while listening to John Mayer, he really inspired to start playing again. Anywho, my problem is that i feel like a robot, I currently did Ivan's penatonic workshop, just the beginner first one, and my problem is that i for the life of me cannot htink of my own licks or solos. I feel just stuck to playing the scale like how it is. I lost all my creativity. And what bothers me the most is that i can hear what i want in my head but i cannot play it. So my question is, is there a way to surpass this. Im assuming it's just going to be practice with back trackings and such, ive tried, i just feel like i can only mimick other peoples playing..

BTW im 19, so HS wasnt that long ago lol. And for reference my inspirations are, Van halen, Eric Johnson, John Mayer and Eric Clapton.

I really know how you feel mate, and all I can say is - patience and don't worry! the results will come, no one learned cool licks and to play good in 2-3 years. People practice guitar for their whole lives to be able to play what they imagine in their heads, so my suggestion for you is to start slowly to develop your style, play some songs, and learn some cool licks here on GMC. There are bunch of lessons that can be very useful for that in any style!

Also here's a small lesson plan that I've made some time ago, some components of it may suit you. Practice the chords, and read the theory in parallel with the lessons, and you will gradually begin to understand more and more of the music you wanna create.

Let me know if you need anything mate, I will be glad to help.

Don't worry about creativity Kai,
after you nail couple of lessons from different styles
your vocabulary will improve a lot.
Also learn as many songs as you can, use your ears, tabs
or any other tool you have in arsenal,
composing or making your own licks is almost
impossible if you haven't learned a lot for other players as well.
Good luck and work hard. smile.gif

Play songs and solos. Learn from them , try to analyze whats happening in those licks. Your ears will open more once you get into steady practice routine and you do it focused. If your concentration is spot on when practicing you will go long way I guarantee you that !

I too was in a similair situation to you back along. I took some advice from GMC'ers and started learning songs and solos in addition to my GMC training. It really does help your lick vocabulary and the more licks and stuff you learn over to the more creative you become.

Dont worry about creativity at this stage, practice as much as you can and make sure its fun. Later on the creative part will come smile.gif

Hey you're 19 man, go meet some people that play! I'm 22 now but when I was 19 I said the same thing 'there's no one around to jam with' - so I posted on craigslist, I talked to anyone that remotely resembled a musician at my college, called up every person I knew that played and I finally got a band together! Took a full year to finally get rolling. It's hard to get started but the confidence you gain in your guitar playing with increase exponentially when you play in a band.

Even if you just find one person to jam with to get started it will help.

Think of music as poetry, look for structure and intention, for example when we are asking something almost in every languaje the pitch go up!!!!. If you play scales randomly is as reciting the alphabet randomly, preety boring, if you are doing a solo think of what is the music talking about and what can you add to it.
Try visualizing, try to get any music in your head, for example a recording of your singing then you figureit out in the guitar, then check the scale patterns where it ifts, and the more important the intervalic relation with the harmony, so you can get an idea of what make the lick ticks.
Good luck!
