Hi friend! This is our thread for Gab's Army! Here I will help you to improve your improvisation skills to take your guitar playing to a new level. The first thing that I would like to know is what you know about theory and also what do you think about your improvisation skills, what do you think you are lacking, which are your strong points, and so.

Please share here some of your improvisations and tell me who are your favorite guitarists.

Making music is our main goal here.

Hey, Gab biggrin.gif

I know very little theory. I've been experimenting with some pentatonic scales. I know the notes on the fretboard.
That's basically all I know, so I have a lot to learn.
My favorite guitarists are: Michael Romeo, Tony Iommi, Zakk Wylde, Rhoads, Marty Friedman, Chris Broderick, Malmsteen etc.
I've recorded myself playing in A-minor (I know there are alot of issues like timing etc.):

Hi mate! Thanks for the info and the audio file. There are good things happening on that audio. Your phrasing is clear, and you make a good use of silences to let your melodies breath and to define the evolution of your melodies. After some phrases I start to note some things that your soloing is lacking:

- Rhythm variations
- Dynamics
- Bending technique (more consistent)
- Evolution / Structure
- More defined melodies
- Vibrato
- Less predictable phrases

Each of these things isn't a small thing to work. You have to focus on each one at a a time and work on it to take your soloing / improvisation skills to a new level.

The first task that I will give you is to choose 3 GMC Pentatonic solo lessons and share them here, then I'll tell you what to do.

Very good choices! Let's go with this one:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...licks-beginner/

This is a great lesson to practice pentatonic phrasing as well as bending and vibrato. Learn each of the licks, slowly, and try to imitate Muris vibrato, articulation and dynamics. The best way to work on this one would be to divide it in 4 and learn each section a different day. The plan would be:

Day 1: Learn parts 1 and 2.
Day 2: Learn parts 3 and 4.
Day 3: Learn parts 5 and 6.
Day 4: Learn parts 7 and 8.

Each day learn the licks, play them over the backing and focus mostly on timing, dynamics, articulation and emotion. Also, dedicate some minutes each day to play variations of the links and combine them with some of your own ideas. Record everything and share it here.

Now it's working! Thanks!

Ok, this is a good first attempt. This lesson is really good to note which are the things that you need to focus regarding your phrasing. At first I can say that you have a good sense of rhythm and timing. Everything sound tight. The problems are more related to "feeling" and "emotion" and technically I'm referring to vibrato, bending and dynamics.

Each of those 3 techniques need work on this lesson. Your vibrato is weak yet, compared to the original lesson, so please dedicate some time to play along with Muris trying to emulate his vibrato technique and how wide it is. Your bending has pitch problems, and in some sections the problem is really serious (00:21, 00:28 and 00:29). So please work on it.

Finally dynamics, and tone could be a bit improved on this one. Your tone is lacking some sustain, and your phrasing could have more intensities variations to make the licks more dynamic and organic. Once again, listen carefully to the original lesson and try to emulate the different intensities that Muris give to the notes to give more or less accentuation.

Hi mate, thanks for this new video!

I can note some improvements compared with the previous take. Once again your timing is good on this one on most of the licks. It's good to see you giving more attention to vibrato, and dynamics on this one. This means that you are going on the right track, but there is more to do about it. Your vibrato could still be wider, and this can be noted just comparing the first phrase with the original lesson. Check how Muris's vibrato is wider, try to emulate it, be exaggerated at first, to gain strength. Your bending is better but it still need practice. I hear some bends that are are there, while some others are still not targeting the note (00:30).

Other than that, I can hear that your playing is clean when you have to play the faster licks as the ones close to the end, so you have to focus mostly on bending and vibrato.

In order to start covering this techniques, let's add these two exercises to this week's practice:

My fingertips are really sore after practicing Ben's Vibrato Odyssey 5, so it's probably gonna take a while before I can learn the whole lesson. I've managed to learn part 2 - 4, but I'm still struggling with part 5 and 6. I promise I will upload it when I've learned it. Right now my finger tips hurt when I'm speeding up on the vibrato, so I have to wait for them to get well again.

Can I practice something else meanwhile and then I will get back to the vibrato lesson again? Or do you want to see what I've learned so far?

Well, I would really like to see you a bit practicing those vibrato and bending exercise so feel free to share a fragment. However you could start with one of the other two lessons suggested. I think that my "Major Pentatonic Solo" would be the best option since the other one has some tricky licks that will bring problems at this stage. What do you think?

Hi Ozzyfan! This is progressing really good! Your right hand starts to have enough strength even to reach the faster vibrato. I noted some pitch issues at 00:11 and also around 00:32. In those parts, you bend to much and make the note sound out, while in the other sections the pitch that you get fits very good with the backing. Other than that your take is very good! Just be careful with pitches and a bit with timing during the faster vibrato.

Keep on the great job!
