Neil Tennant from The Petshop Boys was a music critic before starting the band. Westend Girls was a huge hit and the band were very successful.
Mark Perry founded the punk fanzine 'Sniffing Glue', was a music critic and formed the seminal UK punk band Alternative TV. ATV didn't have any hits but were very influential in the punk and new wave scene. He's still recording. Lack of interest and knowledge about the genre a journalist is covering will certainly lead to less understanding of the music. The best way for a critic to not unmask how ill informed he really is could be to talk a record or an event down completely. Right? If he'd praise a concert that according to the real fans was mediocre he'd make a fool of himself and all confidence in him would be lost. But you're always able to give bad critisism, trash talk a band and stand by your words.
I've read excellent columns on records and shows in the swedish guitar magazines and I've read lousy ones in the press. While the guitar magazines not neccesarily have music critics that could write the best song in the world at least they are interested in guitar music and get a chance to write on music they are interested in. The press should cover everything from Britney Spears, Lady Gaga to Anthrax and have knowledge in all. I can see how it's easier to trash talk when you just don't have a clue. If I were to write a column on Placido Domingo I'd be clueless. If I wrote "I have no idea...." I'd never get to write a column again. If I said "He seem old and tired, couldn't hold his bladder while hitting the high notes - which ne never was good at ayway - and I could spot that he put his old man diaper on backwards since there were runny smelly leakage. Sad!" ppl would read it and hate me. I'd be a star on the raise and I could stick to being subjective I could meet angry readers with more subjective critisism. Yes, critisism should be from someone who knowxs the subject and have an interestet in it. For fair critisism by someone who likes the genre in specific for readers who likes the genre. But I don't think a music critic should be able to come up with a better song himself, that's not fair. But he or she should have vast knowledge and stay objective. Most of the self proclaimed critics on youtube got it wrong, writing "you suck" is not objective. Replying "I don't see your shredding videos" is not even neccessary. The best critisim my band ever got on youtube was "They look like the Bare Naked Ladies with fake russian accent" If not, for myself, I usually pay less attention to it. -------------------- My bands homepage

I don't care for critics opinions at all. Both in music and films!

But,I will reveal an interesting fact, at least in my country- every beginner or a star, anyway, must have his personal journalist/critic,
only the price varies... |
