38 Special is a Southern rock band that was popular here in the US back in the 80's. One of the members is one of the Van Zandt brothers, of Lynyrd Skynyrd fame. I'm not sure if they reached any degree of fame outside of the US. They play straight up rock guitar, and if there ever was a "blueprint" of how to make a great rock band, they followed it to a fault. All the guitar hooks are there, and so are the memorable choruses.

I like them because of the effectiveness of their simplicity. The guitar parts are rarely, if ever complicated, and do an excellent job of creating the mood and atmosphere. The guitar fills are tasteful and never over the top, and the solos are more melodic and memorable than flashy. This really proves you don't need to be a virtuoso to write great songs.

I remember that Iron Maiden supported 38 Special when they toured the States (probably the first time) but I had no idea they sounded like that. I imagine they got more commercial as the 80's progressed ?

But then again, who didn't ? wink.gif

They were definitely popular in my neck of the woods. In fact, we have reunions for my class, and if there's a band, it's 80's rock night and 38 special is one of the defacto bands that gets played. I'm glad you reminded of this song btw (Caught up in you). I need to learn it for our next reunion! 80's girls love this song biggrin.gif

They were a good band. I actually play the "Caught up in You" video frequently when I exercise to youtube music videos. It is one of my all time favorites.

That is a strange combination, but back then it wasn't uncommon to see such pairings. 38 Special did change their sound on their third album to more of an "arena rock" style, and stuck to it through the 80's. At the time, that was the thing to do if you wanted your band to be successful. Their first two albums actually weren't anything special, just your typical Southern Rock style songs, similar to the Marshall Tucker Band.
