Hey all,
I noticed a lot of of the teachers are using parker guitars, the Fly or Night Fly or something like that, I think it's called - just wondering what these guitars are like? I figure since a lot of you are using them, there must be something to them! I'd love to get my hands on one but I'm strapped for cash, so it won't happen any time soon, though I'm still curious.
A friend of mine has a vintage 1969 Guild Starfire - it's in fairly good condition but the one of the bindings on the fretboard is gone, and it just looks old, the shine has long since worn away, and the neck is a bit rough to the touch. Another thing I noticed was that the guitar sounds a bit dull. I put brand new strings on it and polished up the pickups a bit, but the sound is still pretty dull. I'm wondering at this point if new pickups are in order, cause I'm thinking perhaps the wire wound on the magnets might be tarnished after sitting for so long - I'm not really an expert in this but that's my thought. So, he told me the other day that the guitar is mine, along with the amp that he got with it, a vintage tube amp that still sounds amazing ..so of course I'm excited to shit about this, but right now the guitar isn't really playable. I'd really LOVE to have this guitar restored - new bindings, refinished, new pickups. If anyone who is knowledgeable in this area could give me a generalized heads up as to the cost of a job like this, I would really appreciate it. I can't imagine it would be cheap, especially on a piece like this. Also, is this something I could take to the local music store or should I seek out a guitar luthier? Thanks a whole bunch for any advice on this.
