Well, Downtuning is nothing new to instruments especially, i mean you have 6 stringed instruments in other cultures with tunings way lower than EADGBE. but if your just talking about the electric guitar and the rock/metal history, well, there were bands like death who tuned Full step down late 80s, some bands way before them did half step and full step.
Determining the origin will probably be near impossible, and about Korn starting that trend, probably right, but they use 7 strings. and they pretty much laid the nu-metal foundation everyone followed.
Nile, goes to back to the early/ mid 90's and they use Drop A (on a 6 string), And as far as i know, one of the few bands that do, and one of the earliest.
and some hawian guitarists used DGDGBD tuning along time ago, first recording of it were probably...late 40's maybe.
Someone else might know more.
One more thing, Drop D, (According to my past knowledge and the history channel) is a few Centuries old.
