Hey GMC.

I do have some Alesis Mk2 Active monitors, but where I am living right now, it is not possible to set them up. In the meanwhile, I have been using earbuds to compose my songs. I plug them into my interface as I did with my monitors. Please know I am not mixing or anything. Just basic composing. The studio will do the balancing. I just want something better than earbuds. They are awkward.

I was thinking some good earphones, with a good accent on frequencies, preferably with some good low end. They would be good for in the future for night recording anyway = when i get my monitors set up again.

I didn't want to buy cheap $30 ones, nor $300 ones. Does anyone know of good phones? Or maybe it would be worth buying really expensive ones for what I want? biggrin.gif You know, to compare to monitors in the future.

What do you think?

-Brandon

I have a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros.

I'm on my second set of them as well. My first pair didn't stand a chance. The dog chewed the cable pretty good! laugh.gif I actually fixed them myself from that state, but when you roll your chair on the cord and stand up and rip everything out (not good at fixing wiring stuff personally). It was time to get a new pair and I got the same thing again I just loved how they sounded. I actually quit playing video games on a home theater and used the headphones because to me they sounded better overall.

I actually had to wait over a month on back-order for my second set of Beyers due to not only the store being sold out but the company as well.

But the Audio Technica ATH M50 are another highly used set of headphones. I've never seen a bad review for them what so ever. I just know how my Beyers sounded so I stuck with them.

These are pretty good ($97) ...

Sony MDR-7506

And when the padding wears out, you can get replacements ($9)...
Which is something I have to do soon. I've had mine for about three years...

Personally I use Sennheiser HD201s, which are literally £10/$15 nowadays. Mainly for tracking and just general use. Hell, i've even mixed with them. (Same situation as you where I can't use my monitors, but im only doing YouTube videos >.>)

But since you're looking for mid-level, the other guys are right, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s are phenomenal.

I also have the Beyerdynamics, you'll find they are well recommended. Great for tracking and at a push (last resort) pretty good for mixing if you have to use headphones (which we all know is frowned upon). They are comfortable too which is a big plus when you might be wearing them for a few hours at a time

With something like headphones it's CRUCIAL to try before you buy if at all possible. Or make sure you can return them. You just don't know until you hear them. No matter what folks say good or bad about a pair of phones, it will come down to your ears at some point.

The cans you mentioned are a fine pair smile.gif For a bit cheaper you can get a pair of AKG MKII 240 headphones which I personally adore, but headphones are like guitars, people like different ones for different reasons.

These list for $260 and most places charge around $175 or so, but you can get them on AMAZON.com for $126!!!!

Here is the info page @ AKG. These are really nice cans that I came across when I used them in a friends recording studio.

Found this thread via Todd, I hope it's not against the policy to revive dead threads or something. Anyway, I'm also in a similar position as thefireball was at the time of writing. I've been looking at the AKG K240 MKii, which seems to have a very flat frequency response. Todd, you were saying that a disadvantage of headphones it is harder guess the stereo field. What exactly do you mean by this?

Monitors are a bit out of the question at the moment for me, they seem to be a fair bit pricey here in Australia. If I consider room treatment on top of that, it simply blows the budget.
