> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: John Petrucci Style Melodic Solo by Gabriel Leopardi

Found another old one from you, Gabriel, and tried learning it. Guitar needs intonation work done, I think...or maybe I'm doing something seriously wrong at the moment.

Hi Cael!

This lesson brings me great memories! It a solo that I've composed for the intro of a song from my first professional band. smile.gif

This first entry shows, besides the intonation issues, timing issues. The overall lesson sounds "after the beat". So I recommend you to re-check the whole thing to capture the right rhythm and feel before fixing other details. Sometimes it's after the beat, other times, you are not playing the right rhythm

So please re-check it!

I applaud your effort here and I appreciate the quality of your technique as well. I must aggre with Gabe though on your timing. I don't know if it's because of the samples setting, or if you are actually playing just a pinch behind the metronome, as it were. It sounds like you are dragging just a bit. I think if you try to lead a pinch instead of trying to play spot on it may even out and end up sounding correct. But It's just a suggestion. Ideally, you should be able to play at pace on top of the notes the way I can hear your fingers are trying to do.

Give it one more go!

Todd

For most part this sounds really good, and we can hear this is a style you love and are comfortable with.

I think the reason you loose feel and timing at the last run, is simply because you are focused on playing right (not missing notes etc)

Usually - it's not until we master something perfectly that we can start to think about the groove/feeling etc.

And sometimes it can actually be ok to play a bit sloppy, if it gives you more 'brainpower' to feel the music and focus on the groove.

If you really want to nail this one to 100%, I'd say practice the difficult licks intensely. Then give it a couple of days of rest - and then BAM you might nail it. smile.gif
