Hello all!

I'm close to 50 and a guitar beginner from Sweden. My favorite music is blues and the bluesier hardrock like Led Zeppelin, but my taste covers many styles. I'm not that much into heavy metal or thrash but there is some really cool riffs in there thats fun to play. I'm a real junkie for Pink Floyd and Gilmour.

Always wanted to play guitar but never came to it. My thirteen year old son started to play about 2 years ago. To help him move forward I searched the internet for information so I picked up some pieces here and there. He outgrew his first Morgan and bought a Schecter Revenger (really great guitar for the price). I picked up the old Morgan and got hooked. Since I'm the older and stronger of us two, and the one who handles the money, it was a bit humiliating to have a cheaper guitar than my son. I bought myself a Schecter C1 Hellraiser because I really liked the quality feel in the Schecters. Tried the Shedevil, Classic, Black Jack, and some more, all C1's, but fell in love with the Hellrasier.

It's very frustrating though that he learns new stuff in minutes and I have to struggle for days. Must be that my Hellraiser isn't set up properly wink.gif
Well, anyway. My playing wasn't improving. I found this site, checked it out for awhile...
And now I'm here. Struggling along.

Hey man welcome!

Well it's normal for kids to learn faster. If you want your son to be a professional guitarist than my advice is to watch for his technique so he learns it correctly from the very beginning. It's very important for growing players to have someone to watch for their progress and correct mistakes on the spot. I am sorry i didn't have that kind of person so i had to struggle on my own. I am sure i could do it with less time if i had a teacher.

Enjoy your staying and have fun!

Thanks for the advice. I know you are right.

Guess this is better to bring up as a new topic, but I found it hard to motivate him to do exercises. He just wants to do the "fun stuff". He plays very relaxed and fluidly and somehow he ends up with, as far as I can see, good technique. Probably because he finds what works best. Since two months back he have a real teacher to guide him too. Well, maybe I'll put up a new topic later to get some advice from you on how to gently push him in the right direction.

It depends on what does he want of guitarplaying. Try to get him into shred stuff, show him some Rusty Cooley's stuff, Malmsteen, Vai - if he likes how they play that will be his motivation. That's the way i got into shred guitar! He doesn't have to be a shredder - but he has to realize that there is no improvement without practicing shred stuff! So far so good - he practices the fun stuff - but later when he grow up he'll meet his friend with killer technique and he'll wonder why didn't he practice all this time! Technique is very important to be an overall quality player! So try to somehow talk to him and introduce to more advanced players.

Yes - and lets not forget that you can be perfectly happy and successful with your playing without knowing one note of shred. As always it's a matter of personal taste and preference!

I think people often understand the word SHRED the wrong way! Shred doesn't mean you have to play 5000mph all the time! Shredders are people with great technique which can play all kinds of technical stuff. in order to be a good professional player you must master all kinds of technique. It doesn't mean you have to play fast all day long. So why i said it would be good to introduce shredders to him - maybe he'll see it's not all about playing "nothing else matters" (for example). That's why i said in my previous post that it depends on what he wants out of playing guitar. To play it just for fun or to be professional guitarplayer.

Absolutely - I agree, that would be one way! smile.gif

Another way would be to do like rock/blues guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan, Slash etc. to mainly focus on learning other people riffs, licks and solos all day long - playing to the records. That's another way of getting a cool "vocabulary", timing and technique.

Or how about doing like I did - combine both methods of practicing?! biggrin.gif

As always the best is to find a routine that suits your personality and musical taste!

Kris

Agreed. As I see it the most important part is that it stays fun. It's just tough to see your kids repeat your own mistakes and later on realize the old guy was right, hehe. "Damn. I should have listened to him" tongue.gif

G'day Willy

I'm 43 (Thats closer to Fifty than thirty!) It's good for me to hear of more mature blokes taking up guitar. I struggled for years thinking I was too old. Until a 60 yr old friend of mine took up harmonica, and another 55 year old friend bought a Harley. The more I hear of blokes my own age taking it up the happier I am with the decision.

Cheers,

Mick

Hehe, bought myself a 600cc offroad MC 3 or 4 years ago too.
I'm glad I finally started playing. Never regret what you have done, only the things you never did. biggrin.gif
Since I joined I found some more guys here around the 50-ies.
Welcome AusiMik, hope you'll like it here.
