Check out Ben's new lesson: "The Devil Is In The Diad", and then post a reply to today's topic.

Ben states: "The lesson uses 3 different time signatures - 4/4, 6/8 & 2/4." My question for you is, do you find it difficult to adjust to the different time signatures? What tips can you suggest to help those who might have a harder time.

A great lesson for all beginner metalheads here! cool.gif

I find odd grooves actually pretty simple to adjust to (could be because I've listened a lot to bands such as Tool), but of course some of them get way over my head too. The easiest way for me to adjust to odd time signatures is to count the beat: "one, two, three, four, one- wait, one, two, three, four, five, one, two, three four, five - that's it!" When you can count the beat, you know you're there. Tapping with your foot, stuff like that also helps.

Of course odd grooves are harder if you don't have a good sense of rhythm in the first place. If they are too tough, I recommend going through some basic rhythm stuff first, to get the feel for triplets and stuff like that. The rest'll fall in place with practice.

You can also break odd time signature with bigger numbers like 11/8, counting 4+4+3 and so on.
It's a good exercise to listen to some prog music trying to find the right time signature.

Yeah, I have trouble counting odd time signatures. Jerry has a good point!

Practice with those time signatures with the metronome, that should be enough for a brain to acquire a feel for them later on smile.gif

If you can sing or tap-out the beat with your hands, then you understand it enough to play it on your guitar. So listening and tapping along is the first step. Translating it to pick motion would be the second step - and it could be tricky - just like learning the Johnny Cash "dollar bill" strum sound takes practice ^.^
