Orchid and Morningrise is where I fell in love with Opeth. Its there first two albums, and this is when there still developing there sounds so its much more demonic with a slight "calm before the storm" kind of medelys.

TBH I have been so in love with Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse, Damnation and Ghost reveries that I haven't checked out much of the other albums. Also I've heard (offhandedly) that they weren't as good as the above. Any suggestions on where to start?

I would recomend Orchid. The acoustics in it are placed better and it sounded more like classical peices rather than acoustic. Its more straight forward style rather than the progressive aspect that they posess now. Its a matter of what you like and don't. Not many Opeth fans like the first two since its more death metal but I like it more.

Here is Under The Weeping Moon, my favorite Opeth track

I love bot Orchid and morningrise, but for me they aren't as good as some of the other records, (allthough I like Orchid more than Deliverance..). The thing about Orchid and Morningrise (for me) is that they are so.. dreamlike and beautiful. Allthough, I can't agree with VinceG that they are more death metal than the other records, I look at them as (good) melodic death metal, and while I'm glad they evolved from that, I love those records aswell. So yeah, give them a listen, and start with orchid, then go to morningrise, as I find Orchid better, since there is something about morningrise.. All the songs on morningrise are awesome, but theres something that sets me of with the album as a whole, maybe it's the production, I don't know..

I agree! Still life has become my favorite Opeth record. The moor is an amazing song but it has growling in it. Benighted and face of melinda don't. Benighted has an awesome Jazzy solo. Face of melinda has a beautiful acoustic melody, and then at the end it gets really heavy but no growling. I love the part in the moor at 7:21, the solo/lead thing is a great melody smile.gif

So fret have you listened any?

My favourite Opeth record is Still Life aswell!! smile.gif My favourite track is definitely Serenity Painted Death, I can't get enough of the riff at the beginning biggrin.gif

It's cool. I love the part about a minute and a half in where it changes and he growls "white face, haggard grin, this serenity painted death".. omg its just so sick and the riff behind it is too cool biggrin.gif
