Hi!

I saw this cool video from Paul Davids and wanted to share it. I think this video is a good reminder that we don't need very expensive gear but most of the tone comes from the fingers.

Let me just counter "good tone is in the fingers" with "good tone is in practice and knowledge".

So true. I remember years ago when I was studying music at college this blues guitarist came in to record some tracks in our sound engineering class. He had some insanely beautiful vintage Strats and Teles then he picks up this grimy old squire Strat that was not fun to play at all and he sounded amazing playing it. To the extent that he used it on a track as he liked the vibe of it.

It was a huge lesson for me at the time. Thinking that if I could just get that Gibson or that American Strat I'd get to where I wanted to be wasn't the answer at all. Keep practicing and don't find excuses like needing certain gear to make progress.

With this is mind I've been enjoying teaching the 100 hours rule recently. It is based on this idea:

"The rule of 100 states that if you spend 100 hours a year, which is 18 minutes a day - in any discipline, you'll be better than 95% of the world, in that discipline. "

18 minutes a day doesn't seem like that much but I believe consistency of practice is the real lesson here.

It's a great thought, considering that you can do a lot in audio post-production to make about anything sound good.

My theory is....

If your going to invest $1000+ in private lessons for a year with a tutor, then you should at least invest the same amount in the tool you're using to perform the task.

Some people may say that this is large investment, but if you think how much money you spent on your phone/computers/electronics. then its a drop in the bucket..

Your guitar can last for several decades.
Your cellphone or PlayStation will be obsolete in a few years...

Cheers,

I had a discussion with a producer / studio owner here in Stockholm and I didn't manage to hide my surprise when he spoke about all the expensive analog gear he had / was looking to buy.

For me personally, having a good guitar day and nailing the perfect take makes all the difference. And I am pretty sure I could go down to $99 and still get good results when circumstances are right.

However if you are going to record a pro band who've already perfected their performance you'd obviously want to catch their tones on best possible gear.

But then again, I think even a pro band would rather have Bob Rock as a producer with cheap gear than an amateur producer in a top dollar studio. A generous recording schedule might also compensate for cheap gear.

So.. I guess the devil is in 'the feeling' 😎
