What Song Is Taking You Away From Your Practice Routine? Options

Instead of thinking of "tooth and nail" as taking you away from your practice routine, you should make it part of your practice routine. Learning that solo will teach you tons about guitar. IMO your practice routine should include what I call "tools", such as scales, triads, arpeggios, chords etc and it should also include something like the GL solo. Think of it as studying Lynch's music/style. If you like that kind of playing there is no better way to learn it than from his solo's!! The trick is to organize your practice time so you can cover everything that needs to be covered, depending on your goals as a guitarist. If your goal is to just play your favorite solo's then spend time learning them. If you want to write your own music then you gotta spend time learning the "tools" so you can make your own music. Just my 2 cents.

learning this solo has opened my eyes to alot of stuff... the way he uses the scale is opening my eyes to what seems like a whole new world..

Yeah that happens to me alot too... happened to me with bark at the moon, had the whole song down and most of the solo and for some reason i quit learning it and went on to learn all the battery riffs without the solo.. then some more pantera songs

I decided to learn all of tooth and nail and im glad i did.. just gotta get the solo up to george's speed and ill be done with that song...

his solo has really helped me though

If you break down his solo into individual licks then you can count these as your technique practice for the day. Once you get these licks down pick another solo you have always wanted to learn and break it down into bite size peices until you can play it. Soon you will start to see these types of licks pop up in your own solos. How much time do you have to practice a day?

I usually practice/play guitar about 3 to 4 hours a night... then wake up the next morning saying im going to sleep as soon as i get home, then stay up playing again the next night

My routine isnt the best... I always start out with this warmup https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/3-minutes-warmup-lesson/

then i work on my fingering with a metronome for about 15 minutes, and work on my speed picking for about 15 minutes

after that i usually learn some new licks and try to play them as fast as i can, then ill go and reward myself and play along with songs til the night ends.. Only problem is my theory practice sucks, i always seem to loose interest fast on that subject, and I need to work on my scale knowledge and arpeggios... I know the pentatonic, pentatonic blues and dorian scale without even thinking about it but other scales im weak in...

I always seem to get sidetracked when it comes to theory learning..

Looks like its metallica's trapped under ice taking me away from normal practice tonight... I only have limited practice time, gotta go to a comedy club in a little bit, but this song is stuck in my head... Been playing with it for the last 20 minutes..

I love George Lynch's style. Especially his legato!! My problem is that there is always another GMC lesson I want to start before I can play the one I am working on. Guitar is a neverending quest. No matter how good you get you always feel like a beginner. Then, when I start to think I am getting pretty good all I have to do is check out any of the GMC lessons and think about just collecting stamps for a hobby.

Preach on, brother. Even after playing for 15 years, when someone tells me I'm a really good musician, my jaw drops because I still feel like such a newbie. I stay impressed with a new song or riff or technique that I learn for about 5 minutes and then it's on to the next thing.

As for songs that are detracting from practicing technique, I'd say lately I've just been working on GMC lessons mostly. But a couple songs that were taking away from practicing before were Master of Puppets by Metallica, 11th Hour by Lamb of God, Cemetary Gates and I'm Broken by Pantera.

It's funny because my practice routine always involves jazz, shred or blues techniques, but songs I play are almost always good old American thrash

Old habits are hard to break!
