Hi Michael
I use palm mostly when I play with the pick but sometimes even when it's finger picking, you noticed it well, classical position of the fist doesn't give you chance to mute with the palm while this position I use does. It isn't needed that much as on electric indeed,it's hard to hear noise,no drive etc. But when it's needed to mute it then I use it with the palm, not just to cover noise but to have muted notes when needed, sort of staccato. Listen more to players like McLaughlin or DiMeola, you'll see what I mean. And about the thumb, not sure if you think of left or right hand palm but I do use left hand thumb sometimes to mute, obviously, only low strings. Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else!!
