How Do You Know That You Are Improving?

As much as I have practiced I cant tell if I am improving or not. When I play scales some days they go so smoothly and others they are terrible. So how can I tell if there is any improvement. Also how can I learn theory easily like. What goes with what. Do Andrew's lessons show that?
