Good Day, and early holiday wishes to you Muris :]

I was just wanting to inquire about a few suggested exercises/method fixes for some shred techniques

-I have been rigorously practicing a 3nps routine, but no matter how much I practice, I dont seem to be gaining any speed. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this?

-With sweeping, I feel like all I'm doing is picking each note instead of doing a genuine sweep. Is this due to a lack of speed? I was wondering what kind of right hand pick position you recomend, I normally play with the pick between my thumb and first finger, with the other three fingers out (almost resting on the pick guard, but not quite).
Also, I'm having a good bit of trouble synchronizing my left and right hand, which really puts a damper on my speed sad.gif

-And finally, I was wondering if you had any other suggested techniques for shred style guitar playing. I commonly practice sweeping, alternate 3nps picking, and single string tapping

Also, just to throw it in there, what size picks do you normally play with? I've found that I really enjoy using the Dunlop Tortex .6 mm or .73mm picks.

Thank you very much =)

-MattE

Hi Matt and thanks for the wishes, same goes your way smile.gif

As far as I can see,all your issues need more practice to be solved,
getting more speed in 3nps runs, better sync between hand while sweeping etc.
Tho I would suggest you NOT to rest your fingers on the pickguard,
it might cause some problems specially when it's about sweeping,
deal is that you need "free" hand to do sweeping and resting on pickguard
is going to "lock" it a bit,you won't be able to sweep freely, imho .
And about pick for electric guitar I use really fat one,2.0 mm and even more
when it comes to Light Pick.
Hope this helps a bit cause shredding is ALL about staying home and practicing,
practicing a lot. smile.gif

I see
I found that resting my fingers on the pick guard really was not all that comfortable for me, so I normally just let my fingers float or curl them into a fist :]

And I'll take your advice on the practicing, as anything is perfected with practice!
I'm attempting to setup a strict practice schedule for myself

Now with sweeping, which is one of the biggest techniques I'm working on, I'm still having problems with the "picking each note" sensation. I normally curve my pick slightly diagonal, the same way I do with alternate picking, but the pick still seems to drag across the strings. Any suggestions to alter this?

Oh yeah,sweep pick issue,forgot to answer,my fault biggrin.gif

You see, when playing fast it's really one motion to cover all strings you use in specific sweep.
But to have good sync between hands and not just racking around you have to start it slow.
And when you play it slow it's gonna be sort of playing each string separately.
But this isn't wrong that much imho, this way you're able to feel every note you're playing.
Than you need you to speed it up a little and when you get to some level in tempo
you'll have to use only one motion/move cause I'll be impossible to play each note separately.
Let me know if you need more help here. smile.gif

aha
Thank you Muris smile.gif

I found that my Sweeping actually improved now that I don't view the individual string picking as an obstacle

Thank you smile.gif
