Hi there.

Freepizza propose to me this lesson.

Here my work for 8 days.
I have a lot of work to do to improve this one.
The important points I noticed were:
Improve accuracy on part No. 5, I often miss the fret at the end of the round
Improve part No. 6, sweepping is difficult because it’s difficult to place major and index in the same fret. In addition, I have trouble being on the same beat as Darius.
Improve accuracy on part N°9 "taping"

I tested LEXTAC amp like Darius with several cabs "FENDER" MARSHALL "LANEY", the tone doesn’t sound at all like that of Darius.

Here it is a guitar rig jack in neck humbucker

Hi Manu,

Great work for a first take!!! smile.gif

You already pointed out some of the things that require more work. Good analysis.

Take care of the first type of run (BTW that's my favorite pattern) because now you play it too soft.
To make this sound good, you need strong accents and add more force to your right hand when you play the notes with alternate picking. That's the tension moment. Believe me, Darius plays these notes using a lot of strength.
On the legato notes, it's the moment where you can relax the hand. The whole trick is to wisely split the force between alternate picking and legato so the run will become easier but will still sound punchy. wink.gif
Also, for this particular run, I advise you to use the thumb and index motion as Darius did, because it's a part of the technique presented in the lesson.

About Darius tone. To succeed in making the same tone as him it's quite impossible due to the difference between guitars (his SX has a very bright tone), pickups, playing, etc. Even the pick affects the tone and Darius uses dunlop nylon 0.73 with an anti-slip surface.
I used his settings a few years back (Lextac + Kefir + Impulse - Catharsis s-preshigh) and I succeeded in getting a closer tone...but not an identical one.

Have a great evening!

Hello again Manu,

Woowww... great take! And I really like this lesson. Although still far out of my reach. But one day, I'll get there wink.gif

Nice to see new work. Keep it up!

Very nice Manu,

It's hard to find any serious improvement opportunities as you are already doing a veyr good job.

As Monica said, a more aggressive attack (ie 'deeper' picking) will help you get closer to Darius' performance. And that's also the kind of thing you tend to be able to focus more on as you get more comfortable with the lesson as a whole.

I also know Darius uses quite a bit of post processing to brighten up his tone in the mix (so do I!), so that should be factored in as your compare your tone.

All in all keep up the super inspiring progress!

Hi Manu!

Yes, I also can see visible improvements. That's awesome! smile.gif

The big issue is the tone, which is not a good one. It destroys the dynamics. Visually, I can see that you put some accents, but audible all the notes sound almost in the same way.
Darius used Lextac for his tone because it gives a less compressed sound with a huge attack and deep dynamic response.

First run pattern - If you want to get closer to the one from lesson, you still need to add more force when you play the notes with alternate picking. I recommend you to practice this run with the guitar unplugged. Play strongly, in such a way as to be able to hear all the accents and notes perfectly. This kind of practice makes miracles. smile.gif
When I learned this type of run, to get a similar attack as Darius, he put me to play with guitar unplugged. When my unplugged take sounded similar to his unplugged take, he let me connect my guitar. When I heard my recording with the guitar plugged, I thought that was his take, not mine. biggrin.gif

Sweep - This part needs a little more work. Try to add more force to your right hand. Literally push the pick until it falls on the next string. Also, focus on accents and play them very strongly.

Have a great evening!

Hi Monica

I will continue to work on the technique.
Tone is another thing that has always been difficult for me.
There is so much to know that I don't know.
I will do my best.

Cool! This tone is brighter, but it now sounds more compressed/distorted.

I think your previous tone was nice, I wouldn't necessarily change it too much, except maybe add a little more body/midrange to the amp.

When adding brightness in post production you could:

* use an exciter plugin or

* use parallell distortion

I use the later since it allows for a lot of flexibility . In logic pro I use 'clip distortion' factory plugin with the preset ~ 'designer fuzz bright' and I do not apply it directly to the guitar track, instead I mix it in via a bus/aux. This way I can gently add the right amount to make the guitar track pop / stand out.

Hi Kris

I searched the web for an exciter.
Most are 32 bit and unfortunately blacklisted in steinberg.

You can recommend one to me.
Do you have to pay to have something decent or a free one is enough?

I only use the stock plugins in logic pro, so I don't have any experience from other plugins.

As always you can get away with amazing results from free stuff if you invest some time mixing/tweaking.

If you are using cubase, I'd be very surprised if there weren't a couple of nice stock distortion plugins included?

Set it up as parallel distortion:
https://www.google.com/search?q=parallel+distortion+cubase

...and then dial in a bright setting.
