Anybody know how to get Kore to open a MID playerr? I'm new to all this and I 'm sooooo lost?

Not entirely sure what your problem is Hammerhead - re you having problems getting Kore to recognise an external midi instrument/player or getting it to load an internal VST? Also, there are some functional differences between Kore, Kore2 and the free Kore Player.
Anyway have a look at this from NI's forum - it may help. If it doesn't shout again and we'll do our best. I can not get Kore to make any sound. I made a call to a local music store and was told that I need an external instrument for that. This I did not know! I assumed that you could download a MIDI player... Shows how much I know. If you have any suggestions for getting "schooled" on this digital age of sounds and recording please let me know. I am planning on buying the Kore 2 and thought I would start with Kore. It seems it not so easy to just jump in and start.

Hi Hammerhead,
I'm sort of surprised that Kore doesn't have an in-built virtual master keyboard. Maybe NI are just assuming that everyone who gets it already has a hardware keyboard or similar. A hardware keyboard is probably the easiest and best solution - and you can get a basic midi keyboard quite cheaply nowadays. If you can't get hold of a real midi keyboard you could also try a virtual (software) one Hammerhead. A virtual one would allow you to use your pc keyboard and/or a mouse to 'play' a keyboard on a computer screen. Something like this. It's not an ideal solution - especially if you can play a piano - since mouse control isn't that fast. Another possibility is to use a form of midi loop back with a virtual software instrument (vsi) or sequencer. With this you load a virtual midi instrument/sequencer and send the midi out from that back to Kore's midi input. Something like the Hubis midi loopback here or midi-yoke here. If you are using a software sequencer/DAW like cubase they normally will have at least one vst that has an on-screen keyboard that you can play with a mouse. If you haven't got a daw but want one don't worry - you can download a shareware one like Reaper here. Nice thing about Reaper is that it is completely free to evaluate for home use. You buy a license if you use it a lot or if you intend to use it commercially. If you need/want directions towards free or shareware vsi just shout - there are lots around and some of them are excellent. Coming back to your other question about learning the wonderful world of digital sound production. Just for Kore this site may help here. I'd also recommend registering on the NI web site - that gives you posting rights on their forums and access to some tutorials etc. If you can get them where you are then magazines like 'Future Musician' here or 'Computer Music' here can be good though you may need to subscribe. Afraid I don't know what the USA equivalents are. Also 'Sound on Sound' here is excellent but is a little more orientated towards recording. Also just experiment and play with software - there's no real substitute for 'learning by doing'  . Kore is a VST instrument that plays MIDI. Kore functions as a plugin software for audio DAW application like Reaper or Cubase. You must install DAW software, and open Kore within that DAW software, and in DAW you will have the options to import, draw, record, save MIDI tracks. You assign the Kore to the MIDI track that you want it to play.
Also, I'm not using Kore, possibly it can be used as a standalone software as well. In that case you need a MIDI controller keyboard, like on the picture bellow:

Glad to help and more importantly that it's sorted mate.
I'm not a keyboard player - I use a midi guitar converter - but I hear good things about the Novation Remote series keys although M-Audio are generally very good as well. One thing perhaps to check is that many controller keyboards nowadays come with ready made templates so that you can map the controls of your software synth to it. Maybe worth checking that a keyboard has templates for most/all of the soft synths you have. (It'll save you the hassle of having to write your own templates  .)
