New Guitar Let Down

Hey guys. I just picked up a new guitar through a trade recently. I traded a touchscreen nav system I had for a mint condition ESP LTD viper 1000 deluxe. I met this guy about 45 mins from my house so I had no way of testing it through an amp. Anyway, the guitar looks beautiful and I was excited to bring it home and jam out. After an hour of messing around with the pickup levels and tone/volume knobs I have come to the conclusion that I really don't like this guitar. Compared to my RG I find it much harder to play and much more uncomfortable. Also, I am not a fan of the active EMGS. On a positive note- I have realized the RG is the guitar for me. Another positive note- I should be able to sell this thing for way more than the $ I had in the trade.

Wow, sorry that happened. Hope you get what you want again. Must have been sad. I remember when I thought I wouldn't like my Jackson SLSMG because it felt different from my Ibanez RG. But I got used to it, and then I liked it. But yeah, the fear is horrible. I remember thinking - Oh no! I don't know if I like it! But she's my baby now.

But yeah, I hope you find what you are looking for. wink.gif

You really need to try before you buy and it a feel for it, they do look dang pretty and easy to fall in love. First please, don't get a ESP Ltd mixed up with a ESP. They are totally different quality (Ltd is the cheaper make unfortunity). I tried a ESP Viper in the guitar store once, yeah it looks mint, sounds good, but I also didn't like the playing style/feel.

The Ibanez RG have much better feeling (so I can see why you wouldn't like it after playing that). It's also a higher end guitar.

As for active pickup, that depends on your amps settings, you might have to tweak them a lot if your previously playing passive pickups. Also really tighten up on palm muting and get an agressive pick attack angle going.

The ESP Viper I found is really only good in drop tuning - like drop B, and playing heavy. If you perfer standard tuning (like me), then it's not the axe for you.

Well, something good came out of that, don't worry about it. It's just another experience. It's good that you know that this guitar isn't for you. I advise that you keep it for a while and see where you go from there wink.gif

Discovering what you don't want can be just as valuable as discovering what you do want. Either way, it's useful smile.gif

But yeah, I know that feeling of exchanging money for something and then you get it home and have second thoughts.. I've returned a couple of amp heads in the past ! tongue.gif

To be honest, I compared my LTD EC-1000 to the ESP Eclipse (2-3x more expensive) and it looked better, that's about it. The LTD Premium range is very popular, especially the MH-1000. I wouldn't shoot it down so quickly.

It's more likely that the problem here is going from a shred-style Ibanez RG neck to a baseball bat SG-like Viper neck and body.

Exactly! This neck literally feels like a baseball bat cut in half. I played with it for another few hours this morning...just really not liking it. I threw it on craigslist for $550...If i can sell it for that I may pickup a carvin boltc or st300 smile.gif

$550 for an LTD 1000 Viper? Wow, I wish I had your prices in England. It goes for around £700-800 here at least.

I'd try stick with it for a bit, you may get used to it, as suggested.

It's a good school for you! But don't worry much, you'll gonna change plenty of guitars in the future and you'll know exactly what to pay attention to.

Mate, think of it another way smile.gif if this guitar was more suitable for what you want to play, but it's characteristics would demand a new effort from you, in order to play it, what would you do?

The RG's are very comfy to the hand, I totally agree, but I see them as neutral guitars - they have no personality smile.gif but that's my opinion. Stick with this one a little bit more and convince yourself that it's not what you need at all and next time, just to save yourself from the frustration of the 'oh no! what have I got here..' analyse things a bit before buying and don't rush in smile.gif

I hope I have been able to help smile.gif

exactly cosmin, you should see what the guitar can offer instead of comparing it to your current guitar.
i bet that esp has a TON more of sustain!

Well thanks guys! I kept the guitar. The guitar has a TON of sustain compared to my RG. I figured I'd give it a week and it only took a few jam out sessions to realize I wanted to keep it. It's a great guitar. However, I need to sit down with it for a while and mess with the intonation. It goes out of tune literally every 15 mins. This thing has spertzel locking tuners so it cant be the strings slipping...right?

In conclusion, other than the tuning issue the guitar sounds great and I will most certainly keep it. Also, I purchased some new pickups for my RG which I'm excited to install. I picked up a tone zone for the bridge and an air norton for the neck. I played the EVO's and they were too sensitive and high pitched for my liking.

Did the previous owner slap some new strings on and not pre-stretch them? If that's the case you can preform a lot of bends or just play them in, while retuning.

Now you gotta make a new thread showing us pics of the guitar smile.gif
