On my fender strat the high e and b strings pass under a metal piece on the neck. Attached Image My strings get stuck on the metal piece and it makes tuning a pain because when you turn the tuning knobs the strings sometimes stick. Would putting a small about of vaseline (petroleum jelly) under the metal piece be alright and not weaken the strings over time?
