For something in between the free VST and Trillian have a look at Magix Independance with the Acoustic and Electric Bass
It's what I use and you can just use a basic bass setting and then add in the fret noises etc if you want to Magix Independence Instruments -------------------- My SoundCloud

I use drawing tool in daw. You can manually draw the notes...no need to have keyboard at all

4FRONT was my main source for bass, a few years ago. It's brilliant for idea-composing and practicing.
Nowadays I use the Halion Sonic I got with Cubase <3 -------------------- GMC is not just a website... It's a lifestyle!

I use the NATIVE INSTRUMENTS SCARABEE BASS.
http://www.native-instruments.com/en/produ...s/?content=1089 You can drive it with midi tracks or with the cheapo guitar controller that I use which is very handy http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Mustang-PRO...3/dp/B003RS1A7Y |

I have got Trillian and I really like that, but I honestly haven't used it a whole lot. And when I have used it I have used my midi keyboard with it.
