ok I never understood alternate picking and economy picking until now... please let me know if this is right

E-------------------------5-----8----------------5----8---
B-------------5----8------------------5-----8------------
--------------U----D-----D------U-----U-----D----D----U

E----------------------5------8-----5---------------------5-------8------5------
B----------5-----8------------------------8-----5-----8-------------------------
-----------D-----U----D------U----D-------U----D-----U----D-------U------D

first one is economy and second one is alternate right. Now as I see it, there is a way to play the first lick with alternate picking, that wouldn't be terribly complex. But it doesn't seem that you can play the second lick with economy picking.

for the sake of being going into brutal details, how someone who uses economy picking play the second lick?

If you want to really see some economy picking check out Frank Gambale on youtube. The problem I see with economy picking is that you have to "plan" your licks a little more where with alternate picking you really don't. I used to think that there were some lines that there is no way you would be able to play without economy picking but then I found this site and some dude named Muris Varajic, you might have heard of him, made me change my mind and blew my theory all to hell. Really kind of ticked me off. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Here is how I would approach 2nd lick to use some economy picking elements in it

E----------------------5------8-----5---------------------5-------8------5------
B----------5-----8------------------------8-----5-----8-------------------------
-----------U-----D----D------U----D-----U-----D-----U--D-------U------D

So you end up with one sweep at the beginning . Another option is to use hammer on and pull offs - thats quite common and creates even smoother sound.
