Alternate Picking, What is the advantage?

The problem I see with economy picking is that you have to "plan" your licks a little more where with alternate picking you really don't. I used to think that there were some lines that there is no way you would be able to play without economy picking but then I found this site and some dude named Muris Varajic, you might have heard of him, made me change my mind and blew my theory all to hell.
