Slight correction, it's 56 Threads but not cores. The max on the new mac is 28 cores from the new XEON server chip. The board has only one slot, so dual processsing units is not on deck. However, with that many cores, multiple cpus is probably over kill. Each core is multi threaded resulting in 56 threads. Multi threading has been on intel chips for quite some time. I have a quad core i7 which has eight threads and it looks like eight cpus in activity monitor but sadly, it's not.
The new units finally have open pci slots and bays/ram that you can change etc. Finally they figured out after 7 years that people buying a high end workstation don't want all the bits soldered in so that they can't be changed. People are still running old mac towers to this day. You still see them in studios all time. People were slow to adopt the black trash can mac. Many folks switched to macbook pros (like me) or imacs. The bad news is the new tower is $6,000!!!!!!!! That's just NUTS imho. I'm not going to be getting one. I'll keep using my trusty macbook pro. I did recently get a Macbook air as a backup unit though. They are getting really cheap. A dual core unit with Gb of ram and an 128gb ssd goes about $300. It will run LOGIC X and that's the main reason to own one imho. Anyone planning on spending 6k on a new mac? Todd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPuiBk4WmH0...72X5_qEDYlzEVrE

OMG it does not use proprietary hardware solutions - this is what pro mac users have been wishing for- for such a long time!!! To me this feels like a killer move by Apple!!!!

It's not a typical home computer thats for sure Some might consider it cheap for a company-use computer though. I mean if it give a power close to 2-3 computers of today than doesn't sound like a bad deal, I'll consider the day when I make a 1000 track song PS; For those who don't know, a typical song we listen daily uses around 50 tracks (usually less) True. However as soon as you throw video in to the mix, livestreaming, etc - then you can never have enough power. For example you might want to use logic pro plugins in realtime when livestreaming - without audible latency. This would open up for amazing possibilities. I have already done a little of this, as you can see this livestream is quite different: https://www.facebook.com/kristofer.dahl/vid...58028182757069/ |

True However, as a home recordist, I've got a tight budget as I'm sure many people do. This is an great machine and it's long overdue. They are going to be in studios all over the world for sure. It's just too expensive a price point for the average home recordis imho. Which is sad The good news is that the new MAC MINI is a very powerful machine for the price and I think those are a great choice for home studios. Ola Englund is using one. For me, I"ll stick with my macbook pro. It's a quad i7, 16gb of ram, 1tb ssd. It cost Less than a mac Mini and is more than powerful enough to run Logic X while doing full HD video capture.

Apparently if you already own an Apple monitor with an Apple stand, you don't need the $1000 dollar stand.
I'll assume that most folks buying a $5000+ mac pro desktop already have the stand. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine
