Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone can tell me the best and proper way to practice vibrato. While I am getting more and more confident in other aspects of my playing I feel like my vibrato is just terrible. Can someone help me out with something I could maybe write down and work into my practice routine? As a matter of fact, if someone could give me an example of a good practice routine that would be great too. I love blues and rock and Mark Tremonti is my hero if that helps, stylistically I mean. I really appreciate ny help!

I don't really think there's much of a way to practice vibrato - if you practice it to time it can end up sounding cold and mechanical. Vibrato is one of those techniques IMO that you just have to keep trying and eventually you'll get it. I'd just say to work on your bending and if you can master that it may help with vibrato. Bending is a technique that should be fairly well mastered.

Just my 2c.

Practice vibrato on every fret, every string, until you work your way out the whole fretboard. Off course practice one or even half string at a time. Practice it with ALL of your fingers, start slowly and watch out for your pitch when bending. Then gradually increase speed and be sure not to get pain in your hands. If that happens, stop, rest and carry on later.

Try searching "Zakk Wylde" on the search bar. It says "Did you mean Zakkk Wylde?" And if you press it over and over it says "Did you mean Zakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk Wylde?"

In addition to Marcus's fabulous Vibrato lesson, I start every practice session now with going up and down a scale on one string (G major for example , G,A,B,C,D,E,F#,G ) and i use Vibrato on every pitch as I run up and down. I often do this to a backing track! Its quirky I know but my vibrato has come on leaps and bounds recently smile.gif

Some great advise about vibrato exercises here already! smile.gif But I think the most important thing is to incorporate it in your every day playing as soon as possible. Get it into your subconscious and make it a habit to use vibrato all the time.

The technique in it self is so simple, and it's very easy to realize what you need to do with your fingers, so I don't think you should have to actually sit down and practice it that much. As opposed to the sweeping technique, for example...

Before doing a vibrato you have to figure out in your head what sound do you want, then go for it, but this is the propper order.
You must use your wrist to bend (must grab the fretboard like a baseball bat helping yourself with the placement of the tumb) and the fingers to press gently the srtings but keep them without slipping. Don´t over press it´s unhealthy.
You can bend more easy with higher frets and more plain fretboard radios (heavy metal jacksons with jumbo freets are great.
I know there are four diferent kinds of vibrato. bending or vertical, classical or horizontal, a mix of the two then you make like a circle motion (horizontal and vertical) like does E Clapton or Steve Vai in the song for the love of god. Zack wild style, atack the string with the pick down really close to your freeting hand and at the same time bend, theextra resistance created provide crazy and powerful bend atack. And five: crazy horizontal atack, press a note and go down a fret and come back very fast, do it slow and thats ont going to work, go faster and you get a trim go real fast and you get it. Theres a tune called guitar sucks by Ron Thal that use it atthe end of the phrases.
Check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y93cRIAj0gk at 6:52 (sorry its very long)
