Sierra is a killer mandolin player and has been the top of several posts lately. I wanted to share this one where she plays an OCTAVE MANDOLIN which is basically just a bigger mando thats tuned an octave down. It's got a much bigger neck, much broader range of notes that it can play, and is a bit of a different beast. However, it is still a mando. You still gotta hit two strings per strike, sorta like a 12 string guiar, and it's still got the mandolin tuning that takes a bit of getting used to. Still, I'd LOVE to try one of these out!!

QUESTION: HAS ANYONE PLAYED AN OCTAVE MANDOLIN?

So it's like a baritone guitar; longer neck and tuned lower than the usual guitar?

Sort of.
'Baritone' guitar is tuned either a 4th or a 5th below standard guitar. This octave mandolin is tuned a full octave below the standard mando with a scale of (usually) 22 inches. It's analog in the guitar world would be a contrabass guitar or what we commonly call a Bass VI (Fender). Not to be confused with a 6 string bass (tuning is different).
Below that is what's known as a Mandocello, tuned an octave and a 1/4 below standard mandolin with a scale of 24 3/4 (Gibson Les Paul scale length). It's not uncommon to convert a Tele to a mandocello.
*Then there is the Mandola ... in between the standard mandolin and the octave mandolin. The viola of the mando family tuned CGDA.

The mandolin family ...
