Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Hi Nick! Cograts on your first GMC take!!

This first submit is very promising. There are some elements to fix here but you'll be able to record a high grade take soon. Well done.

I can say that you have a good sense of rhythm, there are only some details regarding timing that I can mark. The first section shows some little timing issues but nothing too serious. There are just some chords that sound hurried, then, when you move to the second part everything sounds tight until the end, where I also notice small timing issues (00:52). The funky strums (for example at 00:44) also tend to sound hurried.

The main thing that needs to be fixed here is your guitar tuning. There is a problem in the higher strings so the chords doesn't sound well tuned. I would see if this was a tuning issue or if your guitar needs some adjustment (changing strings, calibration, etc).

Besides this, I notice some moments in which your chord changes could sound smoother, mostly starting at 00:21. This part is full of chord changes and you need to put your focus on making silcence between chords, the smaller possible.

Your tone sounds good, and the video also looks very well.

I hope that this is the first of many REC takes.

Keep on the hard work!!

Congrats on your first take!! smile.gif I"m Todd just in case we didn't get introduced. I run the Shred Bootcamp and the Quick Licks here at GMC. Gabe also has a mentorship program called Gabes army. Feel free to join in if you like for a mentorship program as it gives you the chance to focus on specific skills with an instructor.

Let's talk about your take! your right hand technique here seems quite good! you are palm muting well and there isn't a bunch of extra string noise. This alone is a HUGE thing that's easy to miss. Also your hand synch seems spot on. Your pick strikes are lined up with your fretting. These two things alone can take quite a while to get a good handle on.

The only thing I hear going wrong, as Gabe mentioned, is the Tuning. It sounds like your G or B or high E or some combination of those, is out of tune. As a result it makes the chords sound a pinch wrong even though they look like you play them perfectly. It's always a good idea to check the tune of your guitar before recording anything. I mean anything at all. If you do check it with a tuner and every string says it's in tune, then it's an intonation issue, and you may need to take it to a luthier to have it looked at.

If it's just a tuning issue, then its a quick and easy fix, and just re recording this is the next step.

BTW: In case you'd like a quick lesson about vibrato, this week we are focused entirely on vibrato in quick licks.

Nice!

The flow and groove here is promising.

I would like to see you add some attack and fighting spirit to your right hand - and this will trigger a cooler sound with more punch and overtones. You can study Guido's right hand closely to get the idea.

As pointed out there are some glitches here and there. I also think working on your recording technique would make this one much more enjoyable. The guitar is very loud - if you have problems balancing the mix it could be that the guitar sounds needs a bit of low cut to better fit.

Keep at it, you get a 7 from me!

Hey there and congrats on your first take smile.gif

At first I had a feeling that you play too soft with your right hand. after verifying with orioginal lesson I know that Guido also played the first part quite soft with just a few harder accents. My only complaint about the first part is the tonal consistency of palm muted notes. Sometimes you hand moves away too much and let some notes sound more open than they should.

As for the chorus part there are two main issues - Guido playes relaxed and it looks softly but still stronger than your performance. Try to add some more strength on the strumming part because the structure of each chord is not solid enough yet. Second issue is the tuning - you need to spend some more time with your tuner. Make sure to check fretted notes as well. Guitar is not a perfect instrument pitch-wise so wee need to compromise between open strings and fretted notes. Other wise usually only one of these sounds int tune.

Your playing is sort of "careful" yet but I belive you can workout you playing dynamics so there will be more contrast between strong and soft notes.
