Hey, im practicing a lick which goes

(the highest strings)

E --12h15p12---------------------------------

B ---------------15---------------------

Should i start the lick with an upstroke or a downstroke? It feels like i have more power if i start with an upstroke.

You can do a lot of things there.

Economy or sweep picking would be if you did UP STROKE twice (once on E once on B string).
Then you can do two different types of alternate picking approaches. Start with down stroke on E and end on up stroke on B string , and reversed way (up stroke on E , down stroke on B string).

They all produce somewhat different sound so you have to pick what you like the best smile.gif

i think upstroke, so when u hit bstring it will down stroke, so that u wont get caught between the two strings.

hope that helps.

The fastest and most easiest way would be to do Down stroke followed by Up stroke !

That's how I would do it, too. I think it is the most common way. But there is nothing wrong with practising both.

I mix picking with this lick every time. Sometimes I go for economy and sometimes not. I think my hand choses the way depending on the tempo. I hardly think of that. Play whatever feels easier

More economical thing to do would be to do upstroke-downstroke, if the lick is repetative but both techniques can be used, the sound is different so it depends on the situation.

Hmm, this is interesting and Emir has a good point,
it much depends of the tempo.
You can do it with upstroke on high E and then downstroke on B.
But if you wanna play it more than just once and fast
then I guess you might switch to economy
so it'll go something like:
up, down-down, down-down, down-down etc.
