Guitar Center Today! Need Suggestions...

Today's going to be a sweet day for me; my dad agreed to take me down to Guitar Center! Don't laugh, some of you may take your guitar stores for granted! I live out in the country, so this Guitar Center is 2 hours away from me (full tank of gas there and back) cool.gif . Now, I'm perfectly capable of driving myself, but when I bug my dad enough to do it, we take his truck (in other words I don't pay a dime for gas biggrin.gif).

So since this is a pretty rare opportunity for myself, I need to take some of my fellow GMC'ers suggestions...

I'm looking for a new (metal) guitar, that features everything I'd ever need. I'm not the type to buy a guitar along with 3 nice PU's to immediately replace whatever is stock in it; I want something nice right out of the box. With this in mind, I've been looking at the Ibanez Prestige line (specifically the 2550e and the 1570 prestige). Their prestiges usually come equipped with either Dimarzio's, or the vintage Ibanez stock which I hear are excellent. Not to mention the edge pro and the fast neck....

Although I believe Ibanez to make a great guitar, I haven't gone total tunnel visioned on a Prestige. I've also been looking at Schecter's with the Floyd Rose. Most of these either have EMG's or Duncans. Can anyone tell me about EMG or Duncan? Also, what is the difference between active and passive pickups? Doesn't an active PU require batteries?

Also, any other guitars you guys think I should pick up and play...remember, I want a metal guitar to expand my arsenal. I already own a Mexican standard strat and a G&L climax, both being good for rock, jazz, and blues, but hardly enough "balls to the wall" ooomph for metal!

While I'm at it, do you guys got any good bargaining techniques you use when you buy a guitar from a shop? I don't want to come home with a guitar feeling ashamed that I paid what was on the tag tongue.gif

Thanks for any help

Since I shop at guitar center alot, I'll give ya some good advice.

When you first get there find a Worker and tell him right off the bat that you're here to buy a guitar (sometimes they don't like it when people just go and touch everything) laugh.gif

and of course try as many Guitars as you can, if they know your gonna buy one they will usually won't mind as much if you play alot. wink.gif

be sure to try many different brands etc.

To tell you the truth... Guitar Center isn't really a place to Bargain for a lower price.

I mean you could if you wanted too, but since it is a big national chain of guitar shops, usually what you see on the price tag is what you get.

Bargaining is usually left for Pawn shops and Smaller guitar shops.

Although, if you want to try, don't let what I say stop you. smile.gif

I use to know someone who worked at GC so he'd use his Employee discount. tongue.gif

and keep an eye out for some Used gear they have, sometimes you can find Really good guitars, that still work, For a few hundred dollars cheaper!

Well like Slammer said, try out a lot of guitars. If your there to buy something (and its a trip like you said) then theres no point in getting there, getting the first guitar you try and leaving, that isn't much fun now is it?

And on the bargaining note, they get payed on commission there so if your set on a $900 guitar and explain you came only looking to spend 850 or something, I'm sure you can get some of that tag cut off, but thats not a guarantee or anything : D . Good luck

I like the Jackson DK2 model's.They come with duncan designed in them and h-s-s pickup configuration.Yes active pickups run on 9volt batteries thats why i have never bought one.If you want something with that high of an output sh-13 dimebucker by seymour duncan would be perfect.Ibanez is a great guitar to consider but you should base what you buy on feel and sound not the name.I would just make sure if your into metal not to buy a single coil pickup guitar try to get a 2 humbucker one or atleast a h/s/s . smile.gif

I don't know much about differences in pickups. The active humbuckers requier a battery and have a higher output then regular passive humbuckers (recently seen a review of passive high output PU's). The EMG's battery have a long lifetime. Say a year+ on a single battery. I love my EMG's but they are not for everyone. Very clean, sharp sound. The Duncan's I've tried are the Jeff Beck (JB), Jazz and '59 and I think they are all lovely. If I could afford it I'd get me another guitar with JB/'59. But a friend of mine who used them live complained they gave to much feedback, don't know about that.

don't be closed minded when it comes to guitars everyone has their tastes, and different guitars for different music, try out alot of different guitars. and buy what feels right, now i own quite a few guitars different brands as listed below and i can tell you not one is better than the other just what i feel like playing that day. emg pickups are great if you play metal but depending on the amp settings can be dark sounding, i have a schecter she-devil with the duncan actives and they sound great has more highs than the emg's, this guitar plays great right of box stands up to my 2500$ jackson soloist for less than half.

Back from my guitar center experience! Let me give you the lowdown of what went down...

The first guitar I picked up and played was the Schecter Damien FR. This guitar just straight out didn't feel right to me, and I couldn't spot it. One thing that I didn't like was that high E string bended too easily...really had that loose feeling. It went straight under the B string whenever I dude a full interval pitch shift. Of course, this is an action problem and was probably fixable, but what really made me put the guitar down was the broken input jack. It was busted, no more, no less. Wouldn't take a 1/4" input, but they probably would have fixed that.

Next guitar I played was the Ibanez RGA121 Prestige! This was the first time I ever laid hands on an Ibanez prestige, although it wasn't the prestige 2550 or 1570 I was looking for (this was the only prestige they actually had!). In the past, I have played the regular RG's and I thought it wouldn't get much better than those, thinking the prestige line was a hype thing... boy was I wrong! I can easily see why they're so popular here with GMC'ers now. The first thing I noticed was the slim neck...it was so slick and sweet. The vintage pickups were great as well, no hum. After asking if they had a prestige in the house with a tremolo, the guy checked his computer and asked around, and came back with a no. That disappointed me quite a bit, because as sweet as this prestige was, I wasn't about to let myself take home a hardtail.

So then I looked for a Jackson. I found the Jackson DXMB dinky. This guitar ALMOST sold me, mostly because they had one, and that it pretty much was what I wanted in a metal guitar. Good EMG's and great feel, although the neck humbucker had a tiny bit of hiss. Unfortunately, the prestige spoiled me in only 30 minutes, and my fingers were itching for that thin neck tongue.gif .

So after playing on an hour of so with these guitars, my sels rep came back up to me and gives the 101. I had asked him if it were possible that any GC stores around had a 2550e. He said North Carolina had one and that he could ship it to me, but he later mentioned that it was a floor model, and that he didn't want to sell me a potentially dinged up guitar. I wasn't about to take that offer anyhow.

So after a little bit of talk, we finally worked something! He was currently on the phone with Ibanez and came back to me with the info. He said he was talking to Ibanez at the moment, and that he could special order one for me right then, and it would be here in 2 weeks. I was about ready to make the deal anyway, and said "Get it for me with the prestige case, give me 2 packs of Ernie Ball super slinky's to take something home, and I'll write you a check for $850 right now, final price" he was hesitant at first, but we made the deal! Best thing is, he said if I didn't like the guitar for any reason, they would take it back within 30 days, no questions asked. So this kind of secured my venture into writing a check for something I haven't even played yet.

I'm so excited! biggrin.gif It's almost fun to be waiting for my baby, but at the same time, it's killing me! I've worked all summer for a guitar like this, and I know it won't disappoint, but if it does for whatever reason, I have the comfort of knowing I'm secured. I can almost TASTE the thin prestige neck, double locking edge pro bridge, and dimarzio goodness YUM tongue.gif

About the thing necks, if you had tried the DK2 Dinkey you would have found an even thinner neck. Or rather and even thinner feel, with almost identical thickness but a compund radius neck on the Jackson.
I played this Jackson and Ibanez side by side and I clearly felt a difference.

But the one you choose seem great!

Mick I believe you to be right. The neck was pretty thin on that Jackson, however, the feel of the neck on the prestige was more to my liking than the Jackson. I don't know why, lol. Maybe it's from how much I've been brainwashed here about how Prestige's are great guitars tongue.gif .

Lol, but honestly. Something about the prestige spoke to me that the Jackson lacked! I figure if I'm about to throw down this fat wad of cash on a guitar, I may as well have gotten the one I wanted!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I don't think it's about all of us talking about Prestige! 2 friends of mine have Jacksons - in the price range of around 700$ and even though the neck thickness is same as on prestige - it's different! It's not so smooth! So you did the right choice getting the Ibanez! smile.gif
