Hey GMC, I'm looking to buy a new distortion pedal for my '08 Fender USA Strat and my Fender Deluxe amp.

Does anyone have recommendations for a pedal that will kind of emulate a JCM-800's distortion? I think I want the pedal to be able to give me smooth distortion for leads, as opposed to that gritty vintage distortion.

Any suggestions? I was looking at the Tonebone Hot British and the Zvex Box of Rock. Today I'm going to some guitar shops to try out as many as I can, so give me some ideas to try.

Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of that one but I looked it up. Looks pretty promising. It might be a little expensive, I was looking to spend ~$200 US. I'll try it out and see for myself though. Thanks man.

AMT Electronics makes a pedal/preamp that emulates the JCM 800. It goes straight into the return of the effects loop because it is essentially a preamp. Like ZakkWylde said, it can't replace an actual JCM 800, but give it a listen and see if you like it, because in the end thats all that matters.

So I went to some shops and tried out different pedals. I ended up loving the Zvex Box of Rock from the second I plugged it in. The boost switch is so useful for solos and the "Distortron Engine" makes for some outstanding, smooth distortion. I highly recommend the pedal. Maybe one day I'll write a wiki or video review for it.

I've heard great comments about the box of rock, I hope I can try one some day. Youtube vids and all are good but I have to try a stomp to really know how it sounds!

Try with Tonebone Hot British, try on the same gear, and make your judgment, it's a very subjective manner. Listen well and find out the difference of what you gain in tone and what you pay. If you like the ratio, get it. You can make your amp have similar sound color to JCM800, that is one of the characteristics of tone. 800's with slant cabs, will give you more bass, tight, full-bodied mids, punch, headroom, even combos are pretty punchy, just lack on bass (amp itself doesn't tho). On the other hand, Fender Deluxe combos have very interesting sound, piercing, sweet, specially on semi-clean or driven hard and loud, very different amp.. Bass and low mid region need to be enhanced there, and distortion needs to be added. If that pedal does the job to some extent, it's all good. But, just for the sake of it, don't discard cheaper pedals right away. Getting a great pedal doesn't always secure good tone, getting the right pedal is important. It may be wise to tryout at least 5-6 pedals just to be sure in what direction you want to go.
