Hi GMCites!

Not sure if this is the right board to post this thread but here goes,

Is there any tips anyone can give for singing and playing at the same time? There are only a few songs I can successfully pull off! my trouble is I i find it hard to do the two things together, even on songs i can play real well.As soon as i sing i loose the rythem, i can only concentrate on one thing or the other! (guess they call it multi tasking! women are good at it right....well thats what my missus tell me again and again lol)

most of the stuff i can do is Oasis stuff and Paul weller's Wild wood (my fav artist of all time!) mainly on my accoustic it has to be said.
Im tackling a song by The Fratellis (album Costello music ) called whistle for the choir. Simple yet very nice sounding rythem accoustic. I know its a case of practise and practise, but thats what iv done lol.
was just wondering if any of your singers out there have had difficulty with this subject, or if its just one of those natural abilities.
I think most of you guys are big metal fans so prob would not like this tune that much lol. I am wanting to sing and play a good few tunes in time for christmas to show off to the family

cheers

Hey Bolly,

This is a fairly common question - and all though I am still working on this myself, my advice would be...

Spend months and month practicing that tricky strumming rhythm (or whatever the accompaniment is) - until you can play it in your sleep. Then, do the same thing for the melody. Then - put them together and there you have it!

If anybody has an easier solution to the problem - I want to know about it! biggrin.gif

--Kris

edit: the good news is - if you have done this once for a tricky song - the next one be will much, much easier. In other words, you wont be needing a couple of months for every song. That why it's worth struggling hard in the beginning.

Some songs are a lot easier than others to sing the acompanyment. Start with a good old 3 or 4 chord song, more complex guitar parts can be hard to sing and play at the same time.
I started singing at the same time I started guitar, maybe before.

Cheers guys,

I thought as much, just practise. lol
well at least I now know its not just myself with the same problem. Its only now that i appreciate just how difficult it is!
I now realy admire all the artists I like who can do it eg, Mr Paul Weller (mod god!) and even Noel Gallagher! from Oasis. Tho I have practised so many of his songs i can pull a few off. Still struggle a bit with "talk tonight"

Anyway Kris So you do have your weeknesses then lol. I thought you could do everything lol

Practice. You won't be able to do it without practice.. so keep at it. It will come. The songs I have the hardest time singing with are basically the songs that the rhythm is picked. If its strummed, then its pretty easy for me. I have always sang when I played though, so I have been doing it since I started. For those who might have started off with instrumentals or what not, its probably a lot tougher.

biggrin.gif I am very far away from knowing everything - and if I did know everything I would probably get really depressed - I love learning and progressing! blink.gif biggrin.gif

Like others have said it's practice, but really the more songs you learn the easier it becomes. But if you come across a song or a certain verse/chorus that gives you trouble, think about using a different strumming pattern that your comfortable with and adapt it to the song, you don't have to strum exactly like the recording.
Once I figured that out my library of songs took off, but really just break it down slowly and work on that particular part that your stuck on. Heck sometimes I'm working on 2-3 songs at the same time, just to avoid burn out. I thought maybe I should work on one song all the way, then goto the next song, but that approach just didn't keep it fresh for me.

have fun

John

What helped me is just try having a conversation with someone while playing guitar. (conversation, not just smile and nod laugh.gif ) It helps with your multi tasking. Or if you don't have many friends just try to focus on something else besides playing your guitar while playing a song, ex do simple math problems crap like that helped me. laugh.gif

what really helped me was making sure i knew the song and the chord fingerings so well, i don't even have to think about them. like, my fingers just more or less fall into place and i can focus my "thinking" on the vocals - because hitting notes with my voice tends to be a lil harder for me. smile.gif

like anything else, it just takes practice.

That's so true, I'm almost done learning "Shelf in the room" by Days of the New, but some parts I'm still having trouble singing over in time so I've got the song playing over and over while I keep up. I mean I can play it perfectly but just one particular section, which is a fingerpicking arpeggio, screws me up when singing over so I'll be up awhile practicing too!

I'm not a great guitarist, amateur at best - however singing and playing was something that I picked up quite early... hitting the right notes with the right instrument was always a problem at first, especially when the keys went for a wander, but my timing was usually pretty good.

My technique was 'logical' I guess, the first songs I wanted to learn on guitar were my favourites to sing and bop about to - the timing was there for me already lyrically, and it helped me to keep the timing on the guitar right - I'd know instantly if I messed it up.... usually...

Again with no formal training in either discipline, I relied on circumstance and the easiest but most demanding option... my partner at the time was a fantastic singer, and so we informally developed the following strategy...

I'd put the song on that I was learning... nose down in the tab, listening to the guitar and following the patterns and chords (with the amp off)

She'd naturally begin to sing, so I'd progress from playing along to the recording and start playing along to her, joining in the chorus's (the easy bits! lol) - her own vocal tonality, accent and emotions almost retimed the song, and gave me room to add a few extras or play with substitution... And when the track ended she'd often pop back into a chorus...

Eventually when I'd almost nailed the song, I'd start playing through the amp, without the cd- she'd start singing, and I'd join in where I could... Choruses, easy parts of verses...

Before long I was singing the whole song... whilst playing. Now I just need to get a voice capable of matching the beauty of the guitars!

Shame we're not still together - could be busking in Durham market place by now! lol

oh yeah, totally. a song you already sing along to is perfect.

one of the very first songs i worked on with singing + playing is tom waits' "old shoes and picture postcards." i've loved that song for years and know it in every single way by heart. it's a pretty simple song to play (only uses G, C and D) and since i knew the words and melody so well before i ever even tried to play guitar along with it ... it really didn't take too long to get it worked out.

so now; i always kind of keep that in mind - do i even need music to sing this song? knowing a song that well really, really helps.

which is probably why i play so much tom. smile.gif
