Well about the guitarist recommendation thing in rock and blues, here are some.

I discovered Queen very early, with their first American album. People made fun of me at the time for liking them. Actually their first Album is quite good. Their second album sucked though. After that they started putting out their more famous music, getting popular in the states. Although they had been popular in England before that. Old stuff and new stuff. They have about everything. Except they don't have "Fine Young Cannibals" doing "Don't Look Back". Your saying Buddy Holly reminded me of that. Buddy had a profound influence on music. You hear so many songs, even newer stuff, say like Green Day, and you can hear Buddy Holly in a lot of it (buried in, but he is there, he built a lot of the basement). You might try doing a google for the Top 100 Rock songs of all time. Let me do that. yes, there are a number of lists. of top 100 rock solos. Whatever, just used google. Peggy Sue has to be my favourite song - it was actually the first song I wanted to learn to play and it was seeing the impersonator in Rockin' on Heavens Door that pushed me into learning. I know the reason I like Queen is because my mum would put it on when I was younger whenever she cleaned the house.I had a look at the rhapsody thing but it's only available in the US (UK here) so I'll have to wait until they expand it.
