I don't know what is your level, but if you feel comfortable with your technique and feel you have learned a good deal of songs, maybe it is time to start creating, writing and stuff.

Don't get me wrong, you should never stop practicing technique, and learning new stuff, but sometimes you get bored, you know you can't do a certain lick, or your legato is not where you want it to be, but you just don't feel like working on it now, create music my friend, give it a shot, might be the next step.

Practicing technique is not a bad thing, some just don't have the patience to sit down and play to a metronome all day, so prefer to play songs, both help, learn new songs that are challenging and you will be practicing both at the same time.

Great advice Jose!! I spent what felt like forever just practicing technique, drove my wife nuts, LOL!!. I decided this year that I was going to learn a few songs that I always wanted to lear but gave up on. It has taken me almost the whole year but I am finally able to play them pretty decent and it has improved my technique and kept me interested. I have also started to write songs and that has opened up a whole new world for me. I think you should concentrate on songs. Nobody but another guitarists cares how fast you can alternate pick and there are plenty of challenging songs that will give your technique a great workout. Listen to Jose, start creating music!!

You should definitely make a system of workouts if you have 4 hours for practice every day. There are tons of things you can practice really, make a list of all different techniques that you like to play and wanna exercise, like this:

- chords
- arpeggios
- scales
- strumming
- tapping
- legato
- slides
- bends
- songwriting

etc..

then you write down the exercise for every thing you wanna do, but make sure it's a small exercise, don't need to write some stuff down that will last you for a couple of months! THis will be a bit demotivating. Just write something that you can finish off in a maximum one month. Then do it again and so on. Of course, you should exercise variety of different stuff, including some songs, but since you're just starting with serious practicing, a bit more time should be dedicated to various techniques.

This is a good topic - How should practice be balanced. I seem to pick too many lessons and then I don't concentrate enough on any one. I've been wanting to ask this of the instructors here that do live teaching of students. I have never had a live guitar lesson, but I have done live drum lessons a long time ago(assume it may be the same). Lets say you meet with a typical student for 1 session a week(either 30 min or an hour) and you assign them their weekly practice(and tell them they need to practice 30min to an hour a day- not someone who is able to dedicate more than that). How do you break out their homework. With not getting into by the minute timetables, do you usually only give them one assignment(Such as working on bending) with an exercise for it, or do you usually assign multiple tasks such as: 1) some type of scale exercise(for speed and agility),2) a bending assignment(technique), and 3) then ask them to learn a lick/or a longer solo that the technique. I noticed on the MTP program it seemed like only one item was given per assignment(Such as Beginner - working only on 3nps for a full week), and I was curious if this is real world way a live teacher would do it as well. Maybe this would be the way to do it early one when just getting started , but what about long term.

Any info on this you can provide would be helpful, as I've been unfocused and demoralized in my practicing, which is causing me to waste my practice time just messing around.

Thanks,
mh

Techniques need to be practiced in order to play or compose tricky stuff.
But our main goal is to play and compose music,
so technique is just a tool when needed.
Try it this way, call your mom and play something for her,try to make her feel nice
by listening to what you're playing.
She's eventually not a musician and she seeks just for the music.
That might be very hard when we're focusing just on technique,
we easily forgot what is it all about,it's about to share music with someone.
So learn new songs, play them to feel good,
practice technique to be proud of your skill level,
if you wanna be serious pro player one day
then those 2 things just come along. smile.gif

I tend not to ask my parents or very close friends because they are always going to support my playing.
I would rather just give it to random people or put it in a bar and see how people will react to it smile.gif

I have absolutely no clue. I'm kind of still figuring that out myself. Just do what feels right. I think playing songs is the best, because it lets me play cool stuff that I like to listen to as well.

Here's a weird thought: Practice makes perfect, right? But nobody's perfect. So why practice? blink.gif

Squier strat (probably going to get rid of it and get another guitar instead) :)

Technique is important, but if you don't know how to put in a musical context, it's no use. So learn songs with speedpicking, harmonics, tapping etc. To improve your guitar playing, use the techniques acquired from the songs to compose you own original music.

(im fifteen so i have school wekedays biggrin.gif.) i also wondered if practicing just tecnique was a bad thing. should i practice more songs?

I think that practicing technique is the best way to improve the technique. But I think a complete guitarist is probably made of balanced practice: technique exercises, improvisation, learning new stuff, practicing those you took long time to learn, practicing for playing live.

I am actually a counter example to balance. I always has been lazy for technique and I've been playing live recently, so I mostly focused on learning songs. The effect of this is that:
1) I know quite a lot about chord sequences, rhythm and song construction
2) I have several lacks on techniques

By the way, from the level you describe you are much better than me in terms of technique, and also can dedicate much more time to practice. So yes, I agree with José, that you should use part of that time to write your own material.
What I do is that every time I am practicing, i record every thing new I come up with. It can be a lick, riff, or a chord sequence. It has been working great that way. I have 1-4 song ideas per week.
