Audio over Ethernet is basically running your audio signal over the same network cable you use to connect your broadband modem to your wifi router. Yup, ethernet cable. It used to be way pricey, but its' gotten very inexpensive. Here is a handy bit of kit that supports four channels of audio over ethernet cable. You can plug in up to four microphones and leave them plugged in and instead of running four xlr cables, you just run one ethernet cable. If you want to mic a drum kit, you can use four of these things and have 16 mics running over just four thin ethernet cables. It's more flexible than running a traditional snake as it's modular.
